« on: January 12, 2012, 03:07:29 am »
I just found out I was border line diabetic. Mr Dr told me if I lose some weight I should be all set. does anyone know what the best foods are to eat to lose some weight?...I know about the chicken & fish & plenty of vegies.....but what else? I'm always hearing about little tricks one can do with certain combos of food....any ideas please...thanks

Beans and other fiber will help.  They make sure everything goes through and help you feel full.

No white food, no processed foods and especially no artificial sweeteners.

Cinnamon helps balance blood sugar.

Check out Dr Oz's site.  He has a lot of good advice.

Good luck.

We have diabetes in our family bad. I was always told you either or you are not diabetic. No in between. I always wondered about that. With 90% of our family being diabetic, I don't know of any that were borderline. Good luck though!

dlennie and welcome to FC..........I for the life of me cant figure out why they say borderline either. diabetes is all through my family as well starting with my Grandparents. My Mom was diabetic and so wasnt my brother and uncle...of of who passed away from diabeties complications :( My Dr tells me that if I lose weight I wont have it anymore hmmmm altho my uncle was very slim yet he had it...I wish I knew what they mean by "borderline" but I just want to focus on losing anyways.

My fathers side all has diabetes. My father ended up with both legs taken off from it.But my father was a little hard headed(a lot)and he didn't take care of himself. He passed a way from dementia/alzheimer's also on his side of the family.I have seen his numbers in the 600-700's.My cousin who is a ER nurse told him that he should be in a coma at that numbers. My sister was just diagnosed being border line. She doesn't take care of herself either. No matter what I say.She loves to eat and says she is gonna eat what she wants when she wants.Just like my daddy.Me on the other hand, mine is low.Mine usually stays between 70-80.If I eat a lot of bread it will go up to 100-117.But cutting back on bread it goes back down. They always told my daddy to avoid soft drinks, bread, corn. Those were the 3 main things to avoid. The bread and corn turn into extra sugar in your body.Good luck and take care.

I have been Type 2 for 12 years and it's all about Carbohydrates. Learn to control that and you have it made, plus you should lose weight too. I shoot for 45 grams or less per meal and the only time I had any problem was a period when I thought I could ignore it and went up to 285 on my blood sugar, I thought I had the flu I felt so bad. I can't imagine hitting 600 or 700!!!

A relative of mine developed diabetes and was on medication. His physician recommended weight loss, and also had him on meds for high blood pressure & a couple other things as well, I believe. We'd talked many times about diet primarily because I was a vegetarian trying to work into a vegan lifestyle and, while he was neither, knew the benefits of adhering to a more plant-based diet. He's cut out most all red meat and cut down on meat consumption in general since. There's also been an increase in veggies and decrease in sodas & processed junk foods, but he still enjoys desserts and whatnot occasionally. As a result, his blood tests have come back much better and his doctor has been able to remove him off most medications!!

I myself do not have diabetes, but had a few major health issues my entire life that were primarily GI problems. I've had more surgeries in my 29 years than I have fingers and toes.. and somehow after changing to my current way of eating I have had NO surgeries. It's been 8 years since the last one, after which I made the change. Maybe it's completely coincidental, or maybe there's something there.. My doctors don't have an answer but say to keep doing what I'm doing, haha.

Anyhow... here's a link to diabetes-related blog entries by Jack Norris R.D. that can possibly give you more helpful information -  http://jacknorrisrd.com/?cat=15

You can find lots of really great-tasting recipes online, too. I recommend Happy Herbivore to everyone, but there tons of other sites. My daughter eats vegan when she's with me, as does my meat-eating boyfriend while we're home, and they both really like the things from that site. My daughter has even recently learned to like *gasp* brussel sprouts and kale! lol

I also am considered borderline diabetic. A lab test of your blood gives the indication of this so it is not a *bleep*-nilly diagnosis. My doctor wanted me to attend a program that a local hospital offers for people who are considered pre-diabetic but my insurance wouldn't pay for it because I wasn't all out diabetic. Go figure. Anyway my Dr. found a program offered by Astra Zeneca free. A dietician came to his office and went over all kinds of info with me, including a cook book which offers surprisingly good dishes. They also have an online site which is excellent. I have been following this advice for six months now and feel so much better and have lost 10 lbs as well. As Buddy said, "it's all about the carbs".
