kids and there parents

what age is ok to leave a kid home alone i would say 15 i got a friend her son is 10 and she says she leaves him alone after school because she can afford a baby sitter i told her that is way to young

I was a latchkey kid and remember being home alone around 8 or 9 years old but it was just for a few hours until my mother got home from work.  My parents worked different shifts.  I used to go to neighbors houses to stay before that but not sure why my parents decided that I just stay home.  I was told to go in and lock the door, not to open the door for anyone or answer the phone (this was before caller id).  I didn't have any problems staying home by myself but every kid and situation is different.  I know there are stories of disasters happening when kids are left alone.
