who should you tip ??????? When should you tipthem ????
« on: November 01, 2011, 02:32:32 am »
I have herd all different things, but would like to see what everyone thinks.    We tip waitresses and waiters of course because they provide a service and make less than min wage (typically 20 % of bill ).   we also tip hair stylists , but what if you only get an 8 dollar hair cut..(i know that when women get their hair styled or colored this can take hours and understand tipping in that case)..

then at christmas I have seen people tip the garbage man.. ( they get paid a good wage, but is a thankless job)

I have also herd that you tip you paper delivery driver (i understand that, they are delivering everyday and dont really make much)

So what are some opinions ????

Ok, I think that everyone should be shown appreciation for what they do, so long as they show care in their actions.  If your waitress is a slob and doesn't check on you after she takes your order and brings your food, then no, I wouldn't tip her.  AT ALL....

The garbage man?  Well, thankfully the city knows how dirty his job is and he gets paid WELL...but you could always make sure that your barrels are easily accessable, and maybe bake cookies for him...remember, there is another guy in there driving the truck too!

i always tip my waitress at least 20%, if she/he is good, then it may be more.  same goes for hair stylist, they're on their feet all day long without a huge paycheck.  as far as garbage pickup, i live in the boonies so i dont have that...and we dont get the paper, so no worries there.  we used to leave a christmas tip/bonus in our mailbox for the delivery person, but lately we never have the same one more than two days in a row...so we havent decided what to do about that yet.  cant exactly afford to give money to six or seven people for delivering the mail!

Tipping waiters and waitresses has always been good form.  15% is the standard, but I tip 20% or more if the individual is competent.

Hair stylists are different.  At a restaurant, you pay for the food and tip the service.  Hair stylists provide a service for a fee.  If you tip the hair stylist, it's tantamount to paying for the service and tipping it also.  It doesn't make sense to me.  If hair stylists need to earn more money, they should raise their prices.

I would tip all service providers 15%.  These people make their living from tips.

It's actually a pretty long list. Most employed service providers should be on that list. The owner of a service business doesn't necessarily belong on the list because they set prices. The reason you want to tip the garbage man and mail carrier at Xmas is that they provide ongoing service and in the long run you will want good service. Same for your hairdresser/barber.

If your food and service are good, 20% is a good amount to leave.  Even if it is bad, the minimum I leave is 15%.
Have a wonderful day!

I've worked at several different restaurants as a server. Where I currently work, the average meal is approximately $20-30, so a $5 dollar tip is completely appropriate. However, I previously worked at a steakhouse, where the average meal was $40-60 dollars, and $5 tip was insufficient, especially considering the fact that I had to share my tips.

OmoOdua, you are absolutely correct that you should tip servers. However, you should tip them 15-20% of your meal price, and not just a standard dollar amount.

I honestly think this varies, when I worked at Sonic back in 1999 I made $6/hr plus tips and I could easily rake in over $60 in a 6/hr shift, but at that time we had to wear skates now it's rare that they do. So you have to take into consideration that not all service workers make minimum wage. I'm a firm believer in 15% however anymore I hear service workers I know complain that they should be getting 20% and in my mind I ask for what, usually all they do is take the order, drop off the food and if I am lucky check on us one time - that's not stellar service to me. I tip our hair cut lady well because she learned our names the first time, my son never cries or wiggles for her but does the other ladies in her salon, she knows exactly what size clippers to use on my fiancee - now that is service. I do not believe that you should tip your trash man - yes it is a thankless job but where I live they are contracted by the city, if they're not paid a decent amount that needs to be taken up with them.

Tip only when they're working beyond their job description/duty.

Tip servers always unless the service was awful.

Anytime a tip is an expected part of the cost (going out to eat) I tip 20%+ if the service was good. The only time I do not tip is if the server was rude. My hairdresser, 20%, because she gives excellent service everytime. For seasonal tips, I am not wealthy, so I usually bake cookies or brownies for those service workers.

I would agree. What the employer pays their workers is none of my business. If you are unhappy with the low wages and working conditions, it is time to find a new job. Given that we will have sales tax here. I usually tip double the sales tax at my regular place to eat.
I still feel it is not my job to provide the waitress with supplemental pay as well pay for the cost of my food. I have eaten less because it has now become expected to tip.

I was lying in bed the other night, looking up at the stars, and thinking, "Where in the heck is my roof?"
