On Digital Storage
« on: June 12, 2011, 01:19:34 pm »
Is anybody else amazed at how cheap digital storage space is nowadays? Not to long ago I saw a 2TB hard drive on Newegg for $50 :o I mean wow, really wow. I remember when a 256mb flash drive was $40, and that wasnt that long ago... anybody remember how expensive those 1.44mb floppy disks were back when they were new?

but look at that difference, the flash drive back then was about $160/1GB and now that 2TB hard drive is $.025/1GB!

I think it is all relative since all the software programs we use and files we create need more space.  It seems like we are getting more for our money, but that extra storage fills up fast.

I sure am!  I remember getting my first CDRW drive around 2000 or 2001, and being SO HAPPY that I could finally back up big files instead of deleting them.  Now a 1 or 2 TB hard drive costs as much as a few packs of those CDRs did back then.

when the flash disk come, the company has develop the new hard disk with big capacity. so they sell them in the market little by little so that they can make big money, 128MB, then 256MB, then ...1GB...40GB.......1TB. think about that, how much money they make.

Interesting thought, does anyone know what goes into making storage devices like that? is it some new advancements in technology or some new metal compounds that increase the space? or do they have the ability to put like 100 TB on a disk but just dont for the moment because its just too much work and people dont use that much space.
