Whole wheat bread
« on: February 04, 2011, 09:57:15 am »
I am really trying to eat more healthy so I have been baking whole wheat bread ... some oatmeal, flax seed etc.... so here is one of my recipes. I added a few flax  seeds for crunch.

Ingredients
   Makes 1 loaf

   1 cup boiling water
   1 cup Quaker quick Oats
   1/4 cup honey
   1 tsp salt
   1 Pk yeast (3 tsp)
   1/4 cup warm water
   2 cups-whole wheat flour
Directions

Makes 1 loaf, 16 slices

1. combine 1 cup boiling water, oats, honey and salt in and stir in a large bowl.
2. Combine yeast and 1/4 cup warm water stir until dissolved.
3. Add all ingredients and knead until dough is sticky. Then 5 minutes more until dough is smooth.
4. Spray loaf pan with Pam and set the dough in the pan. Cover with a damp towel and let rise for 45 more minutes.
5. Preheat the oven to 425
6. Bake in hot oven for 25 -30 minutes.

This sounds really good! I haven't made homemade bread in years but I'd like to make some again. I've been eating double fiber bread for something healthier but the taste is very bland.

Thank you for your recipe, I never have much luck with yeast.  We like flex and oatmeal both so will give it a try.

mmm! i had an aunt who used to make homemade
bread all the time and it was SCRUMPTIOUS.

my fiance and i have talked about making our own,
but haven't yet. we decided to try wheat bread a few
years ago, and never went back to white! it has such
a rich flavor, nice texture, tastes like actual food
to me, that's way more value for the money...

how long does homemade bread keep? the only thing
is that i'm afraid we wouldn't use it up before it goes
bad, because we've bought those deli type breads that
have no preservatives, and we can't eat it all by the
time it starts turning...
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

I wonder how you could adapt this for a bread machine.

Sounds good! My parents only bought whole wheat bread when I was younger, so I prefer whole wheat bread to white bread.
