Forum Retaining Message
« on: August 26, 2010, 07:00:15 am »
ARGH!!! Yesterday I spent several hours constructing the perfect forum post. I kept searching the net to ensure that all my facts were correct, and to find useful quotes from experts in the field (I also took an hour lunch break). I finally finished my masterpiece and clicked on the submit button and... "Welcome Guest" "You need to sign into Fusion Cash first"  :o  :sad1:  :BangHead:  :BangHead:  :BangHead:  :crybaby2:

I wish there was a way that the post could be saved so that after signing back in, we could just re-submit the post. Either that or have the "You not signed in" page provide what you just wrote so that you can at least copy the message before signing in again.

If you hit the "Back" button on your browser, it should take you back and show you the post. Then you could copy it to your clipboard, and paste it as a post once you've signed in.

I have had this problem on other sites before, and if I know that I'm going to be doing a long post or something that required it to sit on the screen for a while when I go do research or get some facts, I always make sure that I keep a copy in Notepad. That way if the session does time out or if I accidentally hit the back button (which does happen!) I will have a local copy that I can just copy and paste into the forum. It might be a pain, but it's much better than losing all of your hard work!

I feel your pain.  That sort of thing has happened to me a few times.  I've learned, just to be safe, that if I have spent a long time typing up something, to make sure to highlight and copy it before clicking a post/submit button, or just periodically copying for that matter.  In the event the server went down, or your internet connection goes down, at least all your time wasn't for nought and you can paste it onto wordpad to post later.  Same goes when writing something in like Word.  It's always good to periodically save.  You never know when the power may go out!

I think also, after hitting the back button, you can log in to your account from a new window or tab and then you can submit your post, since you are now logged in.

This happened to me many many times when I was trying to put together the BEGINNERS guide. Btw the back button didn't help much it took me back but the post wasn't there anymore. SO just copy and paste to NOTEPAD often :)

You can see the guide here:

Sounds like a great idea to me if it can be done.

You WILL be logged in, but your post will no longer be there. I know because I tried it, after having to leave comp and then trying to post a lengthy reply. The best thing to do is what florezitta said. Use Notepad, or whatever you are comfortable with, for a long reply or if you might have to leave computer for awhile. That is what I do now - got tired of retyping. ;)

I've also had that experience. I've lost website work, forum postings, emails etc. I still forget to save my work. It's frustrating.

Luckily, with web-based e-mails, most now have an auto-save feature which periodically saves your email to the drafts folder while you are typing it.  If something happens before you finished and hit send, at least the majority of it was automatically saved.

Admin added a "Save as draft" function today, so this should help us all out. ;)

Yeah, I just noticed the new Save Draft function mentioned in another thread. Awesome! This should help! Although it may still require me to be logged in, so if I forget to save, it may still all go up in smoke. But at least the button's there so it'll be easier to remember to save periodically during a lengthy post. Just go by the ol' adage: Save and Save often! (And as others had mentioned, the back button doesn't work... It just brings you to the reply screen without any of what you wrote in the text box.)

New save button is a good idea, and I feel your pain! Every time I write a really long e-mail or something I copy it so that I'll be able to paste it again if I click send and it tells me I'm signed out because I took too long to send it. That really is the worst. What was your perfect post about, anyway?
