I'm originally from Gulf Shores, AL. This spill is catastrophic. Its not just the wildlife to be concerned with. Tourism and fishing are two of the biggest industries on the coast. The loss in these areas is devastating.
I've been watching the news coverage on this, and the investigation hearings with Tony Hayward. It seems to me that even tho he's the CEO, he really doesn't have working knowledge of the details in this disaster. So lets talk to someone who does!
Also, huge concern of mine that seems to be going unnoticed, what about the other sites? Hayward has admitted there are several other sites using the same design, and so far the general consensus is that the design was faulty. So why aren't we checking on the other sites??? How do we know this won't happen again next week?
Another point I'm sure many people are unaware of--boycotting BP won't do the trick. Most BP stations are individually owned. Often, its not even BP gas your getting but whatever the owner can afford/is cheaper. Boycotting them would only hurt the little guy. Keep in mind, too, they are going to be paying ALOT of money in the next several years. if they go bankrupt they can't reimburse the businesses hurt the most who deserve this money.
I don't think this means we shouldn't drill offshore. Accidents happen, yes. So lets learn from this and make the proper changes needed to prevent this. We don't have to drill offshore alone, we have Alaska! They became a state on the condition that the oil be tapped when we needed it.

I think the government needs to start caring, and start doing something about it. Something that will actually make a difference. No, playing golf does not a crisis mend.
