Unsafe downloads
« on: June 24, 2010, 03:12:26 pm »
Are there any offers that require downloads that you guys would recommend staying away from? I have Anti Virus Guard on my computer but I am unsure of how to scan them. I've seen logs on other sites where people seemed to have scanned files with different programs so if anyone can tell me how to if possible, I could try it myself. Thanks for the help.

Try downloading Malwarebytes from malwarebytes.com, it is an exellent free program that finds any malware on your machine that you have acquired from any download. It is easy to use and does eliminate malware when you scan. The only thing is you have to manually scan your machine when you need it.
As for unsafe downloads, it is hard to avoid them sometimes. I downloaded the whitesmoke program and have found malware on my machine that was very hard to get rid of, so I advise you not to download whitesmoke. When FC had Gamevance offers, they too had malware attached to them, mostly spyware. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Just remember not to do any offers that ask for your phone number and require a response via text message with a code.  Usually these are premium text messages and cost you $9.99 a month.

Most of the surveys like, surveyhead, and give my 2 cents are ok and don't pose any problems. Mostly the ones in the special offers are the ones to be wary of especially if you have to download a program or give a cell phone number. If you have to give a cell phone number out that normally means they charge 9.99 per month for a service, so read the fine print carefully before you give out your cell phone number. Hope this helps you. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hello mmangas,

Thanks for the advice.  This happened to me once, and ever since then I've been suspicious of any offer requiring my cell phone number!   :)

It is safe to download some things, but you have to do your homework and be careful.  Some downloads have spyware and viruses.  If if is a reputable company, generally you have nothing to worry about.

I typically never do the downloads and always read the forum first. There's lots of info out there from folks who have downloaded and have reported back.  They are your best resource. so listen to them.

I like to stay away from the downloads generally, but everyone kept saying they got instant credit and so I went ahead and downloaded a game thing a while ago.  It was reported as malware online, so if you are thinking about downloading something take a few minutes to google it before you get a bunch of spyware that is difficult to get rid of.
