I view it as an act of random kindness.

If I were the woman and had reasonable self esteem, I'd just say:  Thank you; I think so too, but it's nice to hear you confirm it.

Think positive thoughts and they will come back to you.
Think negative thoughts and they will bite you back.

I think this was just a nice thing to do or maybe the man really did think that the woman was beautiful.  There are many men and woman out there that are attracted to heavier men and women.

Personally, I like my women with a little bit of chub.

I agree with this:

It could be a bit insulting. Instead, it would be very flattering if the guy didn't even mention what just happened at all. If he went over to her, and started talking to her casually and being very interested in talking to her, it would cheer her up. If he offered to talk her to some place to get a snack after school or something like that, she would be really flattered.
I think the best way to flatter/cheer someone up in that situation, is to distract them from it.

Imagine this...

Its a crowded high school cafeteria.  Over in a corner is an overweight woman that constantly gets teased because of her looks and weight.  She's sitting alone, and looks unhappy, the same way she does every day.  A guy comes up to her, stops, and tells her "You are beautiful.  Don't let anybody convince you that you're not."  and then walks away.

Would something like this be flattering?  Or would you think he's just a creep trying to just get an easy lay from someone he thinks has low self-esteem?  Or would it just be weird?

I think he sees what goes on, on a daily basis and felt bad for her. He felt bad enough that he finally said something.

If she was constantly teased then I think it would be a very brave and kind thing for him to do. She wouldn't think "omg so you mean people think I'm fat? thanks" because if she was constantly teased she would already know that.
