i agree with you, pits are really sweet when treated right.  i had a friend with 2 of the most loving pits on the planets.  big babies for sure, but they are not to be messed either.  as a breed they are territorial, as are many other dogs.  like chihuahua's ... heck, they can give you a nasty bite before you can ever catch them! har

no, pits are good if the owner is good.  same for rottwilers and dobermans ...

i think i read somewhere that there are more dog bites reported from small dogs than larger breed gods! :dog:

We had a female pit bull and she was so loving. I called her my baby girl. She was great with people but she'd go after cats and squirrels. She died from a rattlesnake bite. I miss my girl from time to time.

I personally don't like them, only because of an incident a friend of mine had with one. The dog was brought up in the house as a pup and was treated very well, never abused. He was playing with their two year old daughter and locked onto here arm that had a toy in it, Luckily my friend poured cold water on him and he released. Also, luckily his two year old daughter had minor punctures in her arm that did heal. After that instance, I would never again trust a Pit. It may have been just the animal itself and not the breed. I personally just don't trust that breed.

i've never personally interacted with one,
but i don't see that they're a huge deal.
i adore dogs in general and imagine that if treated right,
a pit would make a fine pet.

but then again, of course, i think you need to be careful with how you handle and treat pretty much any animal.

In the words of Lennie Briscoe from Law and Order, "Dogs don't kill people, people kill people." It's all in the training and treatment of the dog. My aunt has a pitbull that used to be a fighting dog and he is very sweet and wonderful.

I don't think its the animal but the way the animal is trained and brought up!

I agree, it's not the bread as much as the training and treatment.  I knew a little black dog that was abused and would go after ankles.  I also have known and had big dogs that were as gentle as lambs.  Raise them right and they'll be gentle and secure.    :dog:

:crybaby2: I know pits get a bad rap and how loving they can be. I watch the show Pit Boss. I mean my own 20lb fox terrior has bitten my husband and I a few times out of frustration over having his paws touched while being bathed. Plus he's getting old. My sister was telling me the other day a normally well behaved and well treated pit bull attacked a child recently somewhere up north. I don't think I'd take the chance of having one around children.  :cat:

Pit bulls are sweethearts, most of the time it is the owners fault. They do have a big jaw than can be dangerous if they bite, Any dog can be dangerous if they bite but other dogs do not do as much damage.  People need to watch all dogs, they all can be unpredictable, but I feel the pit bull gets a bad rap

I really don't care for Pit Bulls, but to each his own.  I am more of a small dog lover.  My niece has a Pit and I don't care for her.  She has never had any trouble with her at all.  I believe it is how a person trains and raises a dog that makes them calm or mean.

I think if a pit is well treated and well socialized it would do fine. BUT I would not trust it with a small child. A child can give off the wrong vibes and the pit will read it wrong. Hense, bite. That's just my humble opinion.

I do not like pit bulls...I think that they can be the meanest dogs. But yes, if treated right they can be the nicest dogs around. I am too scared to even get close to one.

they are sweet lovable dogs that are misunderstood.  Any animal will respond to what it is subjected to whether it is love or rage. :peace:

I am afraid of them. And stay away from them. I saw some pit bulls chained to a backyard. If they break the chain, they will attack you!

This is a subject that drives me crazy!  I rescued a pit and a pit mix.  They have to be best dogs I've ever had.  I've seen small dogs bite children over and over again while both my babies sit quietly while kids climb all over them.  Any dog can be dangerous, but pits are very strong naturally.  It's just better news when they get aggressive.  A small terrier biting or attacking a child isn't sensational enough.  Make it a doberman or a rotti, and it's front page news.  I know larger dogs do more damage, but that doesn't mean the breed should be suspect.  Look at the owner!

If anyone remembers the little rascals, that dog was a pit.  Pits were actually nick-named the "nanny" dog and were hugely popular back in the 40's I believe.  They are excellent with children.  The last time I googled dog bites, golden retrievers topped the list of the dog that bites the most. I would have a german shepherd, doberman, rotti or pit bull any day.  Just my two cents.  I  know that everyone has different experiences.  I just hope that everyone will keep an open mind.  God bless!

I think that any animal really can be a dangerous animal. Pit Bulls just have always had a bad reputation because what they may be associated with such as drug dealers, gangs, and negative steriotypical situations such as that.  However, pit bulls are and can be good pets just like any other animal it just really depends on how they are brought up by the handler from day one.

My Golden Retriever mix works for us right now, so I wouldn't consider another dog. However, I just heard a story on the news about how two pit bulls rescued a man in my area. They woke him up when he was in danger and got him to safety.

All the pit bulls I have been around were very playful, happy and energetic. I think like anything else you shouldn't blame the dog but rather the owner if they are a dangerous animal. Similarly to if a child committed a crime you would hold their parents responsible.

I agree. The pits get a bad name because of bad owners.I had a pit for 10 yrs. From a puppy up.He passed away this summer. He was 4 months older than my granddaughter. He grew up with both granddaughters.Snapped one time at the oldest one,but she kicked him in  the straddle. He just made a snapping sound, but I think anyone would when kicked in the straddle. They sat on him and when he got enough he would just get up and let them fall to the ground. They loved it.He sat in the sandbox and let them pour sand on him and loved to chase them.He was a very sweet dog and we will miss him forever. My youngest one still says I kiss Rocky nanny,he was my favorite dog.She is 7.OWners need to treat them right and they won't have a problem. The bad owners need to be treated like they treat the animals.

I've known some wonderful pitbulls and they were wonderful with the kids in their families.
People that want pitbulls should do alot of research on what the dogs are like and need before rushing out to get one.   People  need to use some common sense at all times to ensure the dogs safety  because they are just like little children that require alot of love & attention and they depend on us to keep them safe, healthy and happy...just like all other dog breeds.

My dog Shadow was considered to be a lab/pit mix (she was a lab/Staffordshire Terrier mix, even though Staffordshire Terriers are now a dog breed that is recognized by the AKC---people still lump "staffordshire mixes" in the term "pitbull".) I've had & worked with ALOT of great dogs but it was Shadow that really impressed me with her intelligence, humor and attitude.  When she passed away this past August, it totally broke my heart and my other dog is missing her so much also.  Everyone should be so blessed as to have a dog as great as she was.
