A bill dubbed the ‘RESTRICT’ act that was submitted to Congress could have severe consequences for virtual private network (VPN) users in the United States.

U.S. lawmakers are widening their sights when it comes to cracking down on finance and technology.

The bipartisan “Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT)” act was unveiled in early March.

It was initially dubbed the “TikTok Ban Bill,” but has far wider ramifications. Furthermore, VPN users could face hefty fines or jail sentences under the bill.

It’s like they want to keep everyone in line just by scaring us. I mean, a lot of folks use VPNs for pretty harmless stuff, like accessing their favorite shows that are locked to certain regions. It’s not like we’re plotting some grand heist! I’ve also dabbled with 4G/LTE/5G rotating mobile proxies for more secure browsing. They’ve been super helpful for my online activities without the fear of being tracked. The hefty fines and prison time seem way over the top, right? I think selective enforcement is likely, as you mentioned, but the idea of someone getting hit with a $1M fine for just trying to watch a movie feels ridiculous.

I think you found the real reason they want to ban VPNs. They don't want you using Netflix with a VPN to get any/all shows/movies. They want you to stick to what's available in your region for your streaming service and subscribe to the other streaming services to get other shows/movies, it's all about money.
