I noticed a lump on my dog's leg last weekend. X-rays show it's most likely bone cancer. She's not in pain yet, but I can't stop thinking that we have only a few months left with her. She just had her 7th birthday, and she's only been in our lives for two years. This sucks. 

Why jump completely to the negative? Or do you already know it is in his bone? Some cancerous lumps like that can be removed. Maybe that will be the case with your dog.

It appears to be osteoarcoma. The vet and I took the x-rays. When I saw them, I knew immediately what it was. The vet didn't even have to say anything. We could do a biopsy for an absolute diagnosis, but then we risk damaging and fracturing the bone.

Oh. I had a dog that had a lump come up on his front leg. It was at least as big as a golf ball but more oblong. I did not think it looked right and took him in and they removed it, of course going a bit deeper than just the mass. It was cancer but when they removed it they got all of it and the cancer as well.  I thought maybe it could be something like this. I know you have worked with vets but so many times people tend to jump completely to the most negative. So is there not anything they can do?

Thank you, everyone. I have a consult with an oncologist tomorrow to devise a plan. My girl seems to be fine so far. I have her on pain meds just in case. We have already started making changes to make sure she's more comfortable. I ordered a ramp to get in and out of the suv, and we are avoiding going down stairs to reduce the impact on her leg.

If it's a soft tissue mass, there's a possibility of removing it. A bone mass is more difficult. They can do limb-sparing surgery to remove just the part of the bone where the cancer is, but there is a high risk for infection and more surgeries. And chances are the cancer has already spread but isn't detectable on x-ray yet. Anyway, yes, I assume the worst, because that's just how I am. We shall see tomorrow what the oncologist has to say.
