My Husband is a Truck Driver.  He taught me how to read a map.

     Yes, I read maps because they are useful.
Do not forget some areas do not have cell phone services.
You are going to need paper maps to find your way.

When I was young I worked reading electric meters - they would give me a map and tell me to go do this neighborhood - before cell phones and GPS. I became pretty good at it over time
