Grocery store "essential" personnel 14k infect/exposed

From TelWut:

Grocery store employees have worked through every coronavirus surge as "essential" personnel critical to maintaining the food supply.

Their service has come at a steep cost:

The United Food and Commercial Workers union says more than 100 grocery store workers have died of COVID-19 nationwide and at least 14,000 have been infected or exposed to the virus.

Do you think grocery workers should have a pay increase due to the risk of coronavirus?

In a word; no. I worked as a cashier for a grocery store and would never have expected to have extra pay for a random disease that I may or may not catch.

If you were concerned about catching something, you could certainly wear a mask for protection along with the other recommended safeguards. Then take your chances, IMO.

After all, if a customer knows they are sick, they shouldn't expose others by coming to the store. And we know that if they don't stay home but choose to take risks, we can still take the proper precautions ourselves for our own protection.  :angel11:

Any job where you might be around crowds is more dangerous getting the virus.

Its sad the times we live in now.If you have a job like that how it has turned into a battlefield.

All you can do is take the precautions and hope for the best.I still say having a strong immune system besides the precautions is the best medicine.

Its still sad that many have been exposed to it for just going to work.Normal is a thing of the past.

What was the pay for a soldier that got sent to Vietnam? Is this any different?

No more than any one else.  100 out of MILLIONS is not that huge of a number.  Why should a grocery store worker get more pay and not every one else who has worked?  And the paid to sit on your fat A at home needs to stop.  There are jobs every where.  Get one of them!

I know people who have worked at Walmart every day since last Feb and they did not catch anything.  It is no different than the flu.  You might catch the flu from customers during the winter.  And you might die.  I know a woman who died from the flu.  So are we gonna shut the world down during flu season?  If they want to give me $2000 a month just deposited in to my checking account every month then I will consider never leaving my home. :D

I always feared this and am grateful for everyone that works in grocery stores. The numbers quoted below still surprised me and is sad. Almost all grocery stores have precautionary measures being put in for their employees. I hope that the situation will improve significantly going forward.

All essential workers should be recognized and protected.  Whether it be financially, or with adequate PPE.  No-one should be left out.
