WASHINGTON — Lockdowns and protective measures like the widespread wearing of face masks as a result of the coronavirus pandemic have driven influenza infections to record lows, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.

The authors of the study urge such measures to remain in place in order to keep the flu from returning, as it customarily does with colder weather, which will soon drive people indoors across much of the U.S. “If extensive community mitigation measures continue throughout the fall, influenza activity in the United States might remain low and the season might be blunted or delayed,” the researchers write in their new study.

The study is being published on Thursday in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a digest of the latest findings from the agency. The study looked at flu infections in the U.S. from late 2019, when the flu season began, to early 2020, when lockdowns began across the country in response to the coronavirus.

If masks are so effective, I guess nobody needs flu shots this year! /s
I would be interested to see what the flu numbers turn out to be for this year, if I had more faith in the reporting.

We are all getting our flu shots, no need on being one of the few people who get the flu.   The flu prevention and   covid prevention steps are pretty much the same.  Although the people I have seen with the flu in the past do not seem to be nearly as sick as the one with covid.  So of the ones with covid are still having problems weeks after getting over it.  Our friends son told his Dad on the phone he was sorry and mad because he thought it was just a hoax.  He died later that night with no other health issues and alone.  Lets hope that the flu is at a record low this year and that this covid thing also runs it course.

LOLOLOLOL  It is not flu season yet.  ::)  How foolish can people be?  And the flu will be non-existent this year because everything will be called covid.  I have family in the medical field.  If you go to the doctor with a runny nose it is auto a covid suspect.  ::)  It is ridiculous.  And it has nothing to do with the covering your face.  But feel free to keep doing that.

If masks are so effective, I guess nobody needs flu shots this year! /s

Exactly. But they are already saying a flu shot is more important than ever this year.  ::)  You are right - if a mask works then nobody needs a flu shot or this new stupid vaccine they are trying to shove down our throat. The majority of people I have talked to said they won't get it.  The ones that do want it seem to be mad but I don't get that either.  If you get your precious vaccine then you are safe.  Don't worry about me!

I am so sick of hearing oh I thought it was a hoax and I honestly don't believe that.  Nobody ever said the virus was a hoax.  The virus is real.  Just like the flu.  The media fear monger hype surrounding it is what people say is a hoax.  The CDC released data saying the numbers were basically fabricated.  Only a little over 9000 people died from Covid and had no other health issues.  If you are morbidly obese the flu is more likely to kill you.  If you have breathing issues or other health problems the flu is more likely to kill you.  It is no different.  It seems funny you say you hope covid just runs it's course.  This has been going on since March.  Overall you are right though it will run it's course.  It will all go away in November.

If you are going to get this then you will.  It is the same with the flu.  It does not matter if you believe it is real or not.
You can only do so much.  And wearing a mask is foolish.  Watch people with a mask on.  They constantly fondle, handle, and pull and touch the mask.  The mask is worthless.

I like your posts countrygirl12. They're so colorful. You just don't hold back; nor should you.

I don't wear a mask unless forced to do so. And I endure the looks I get from people who think I'm B-l-o-o-d-y Mary. I'm not really. No, really. I'm just exercising my constitutional right to NOT wear a mask since everything I read tells me that it is an exercise in futility.  ::) I fully support your right to wear a mask if it makes you feel better. I think you're nutty to do so, but that won't hurt you if I don't say anything to you or look at you funny.

I still wish we could treat this type of flu like other epidemics and pandemics in the past. Exercise caution, restraint and protect yourself, but don't go crazy with fear and worry. Just don't do it!  :turkey:

I do stand on the social distancing circles silently thinking about how stupid it is to do so because I guess there's no harm, no foul there. It's just dumb; that's all. :silly:

My strong hope is that this will end and we'll not have to go through the rest of our lives wearing masks, social distancing and not touching anyone ever. I like touching people and being touched. It's a nice part of our humanity. So is actually seeing other people's faces and smiling at them and talking to them. Oh, how controversial all that is now. Heartbreaking. :'(

So why dont you give CG a thank you?She has been stuck on 424 for quite some time now.Shows NOT many listening to her BS.

She says dont worry about her.Being stuck on 424 proves NOT many are......yet she still rattles on and on RE the mask.

Shes the type if she was about to be buried 10 ft under cos of the virus she still wouldnt admit she caught it.

Im pretty sure her place of WOEship has been congregating.A sure place for disaster and instructions from God a no no.

If FC was smart they should deduct $$$ from CG for every post she writes.

OH,and in my state there are rulz RE wearing the mask.Im not sure whats going on in other states.Maybe thats why NY is in better shape then others are now.

Lets hear from those on FC that are against it what state they are in so we can compare the stats how your state is doing.

And even if your state is doing bad im sure they will come out and say the authorities are BSing.

I know one thing. The TRUE God has instructed us what to do and he backs it up feeding his people spiritually respecting the virus still.

Nope.  I don't do the coddle thing. haha  Most people in my area are not wearing  a mask.  You see more and more not wearing them.  And the ones forced to (employees) are wearing them around their chin.    If you want to wear one then do so.  If you don't then don't.  I don't go to town often and I don't have to wear one while working. But more and more are bucking the "mask rule".  Our state never had a mandate.  Some counties have had them but ours did not.  I don't know if people ignored it in the counties that did have one. I did notice today that our Walmart has taken down the signs off the doors that say a mask is required.  I would say about half or more of the people were not wearing them.  People only wore them maybe 2-3 weeks.  Once a few were allowed to continue to shop with no mask more and more followed suit.  The mask is stupid and it is not going to keep you from getting a virus that will just go right through the mask.

Makes sense if you are sick to wear a mask so others don't get what you have.   I think the flu season won't be as bad because most people are wearing masks now. People in Asia have done it forever why the hell people are so opposed to do it here?

It makes sense that if you are sick you stay at home. The mask is not going to stop the flu any more than cov.
I was not aware that everyone in Asia covered their face every time they went out in public.  If you want to wear a mask then by all means do so.  But don't expect every one else to bow to the left.  The only reason the "flu" cases will be less this year is because EVERYTHING will be called cov instead.

My question is why the h*ll so many idiots are so willing to give up freedoms and be controlled?  ::)

Interesting study though lots of possible reasons for that data ....more people scared of coronavirus led us to be more careful, could be misdiagnosis too, more people getting flu shot

We need to be wary of strongly worded opinions.  A forceful opinion doesn't make it the truth.

It will be a welcomed change to have less flu cases this year.  I heard that it in itself is an awful thing to go through.  Thank God I have never had to go through it and I pray that it will not come my way.  I guess I will wear my mask as a precaution.
