So mad
« on: July 14, 2020, 06:04:21 am »
I looked out my back window, the deer ate all my hosta    I know they are hungry, but really why must you pick on mine?  It's bad enough they ate about 12 of my arbovitae so that's going to cost $ for replacements.  They are nice to look at, but they can do damage.  Yesterday I had a mommy and her baby in my yard.

My husband also gets mad with the deer or bunnies eat his hostas or other plants.  It really doesn't bother me.  They have to eat too.  He also gets mad when the squirrels eat the bird seed out of our feeders.  Again, they also have to eat.  We have to share the earth with all creatures.  It doesn't belong to just us.  Maybe plant something else next year that deer don't like to eat?

We have 4 bird feeders, a few critter feeders and put apples out for the deer and they still love  our plants. It’s annoying to have to pay for the plants again.

I live in town so I don't get to see wild life like deer.  I used to have a wild squirrel that loved to garden.  It was cute.  I had just planted some flowers,  he came up, pulled the plant from the soil.  Looked it over including the roots.  Then put it back.  I found later that he also planted an acorn under that plant.

Oh my what a pain.  Yes they are nice to look at but they will eat your ornamentals and whatever looks good to them.  The worse I have had it a mama duck who laid her eggs in my hedges and now thinks she & her babies live here - the lawn guy says he thinks they continue to come back to the hedges and my son says they follow him back and forth when he is making trips unloading groceries out of the car.

The deer would come into the yard and eat my parent's plants. It would annoy my mom sometimes, but they were always fun to watch.

Wonder if you could put something out there they could eat? I have, so far, never had a deer in my yard eat anything other than maybe grass.

I think they make something that you can put out that keeps the deer from eating your plants.  I don't know what it is called but you should be able to ask someone at a hardware store.

I put apples out every day for the deer hoping that would help, but it doesn’t.  Last night I looked at my outside cameras at 11 pm and saw 1 deer eating bird food, 2 eating hosts and 2 more just standing around! lol.

There is deer repellant you can buy, but I have way too many things in my yard.  I did do that but it only lasts about 1 to 2 weeks and we had to buy 5 gallon sizes to cover everything.  The expense is overwhelming.

They love to eat from our garden as much as we do.  Deer, rabbits and who knows what other critters.  But I sure enjoy watching them.

Poor animals that get pushed out of their normal environments and then encroach on us to find food.

They are a nuisance and cause lots of damage, but to their credit, what would you do in their situation?

Have you use chicken wire around your plants?

Around the small ones yes, but the arborvitae are 6 feet tall.  They don’t eat the tops, they eat the center.  We have probably 50 arborvitae that’s a lot of chicken wire. lol
