I Finally Planted My Indoor Herb Garden!
« on: July 12, 2020, 01:25:16 pm »
After talking about it for a couple of years, I finally planted my indoor herb garden. First I ordered a Socker glass greenhouse from Ikea, and it took 3 months to get it due to the pandemic. Once the greenhouse arrived, I went to home depot to get seedlings, peat pots, and starter soil. They had everything but the seedlings. So when I got home, I ordered them off of Amazon. They got here in a couple of days, and I planted the seeds and put them in the little greenhouse and set  it on our buffet table. Luckily, since I have a cat, the little glass greenhouse has two doors that close (leaving a way to get air) so that my cat doesn't get into it. Of course, each morning I've looked at the pots to see if anything has started growing. Nothing yet, but it's only been 3 days, LOL!  :peace:  :clover:

That is pretty cool! That was a long wait for the greenhouse but worth it. Watching to see if it has started growing will be something to look forward to each day.

Very nice! I miss having a garden, even just for herbs. There are pros and cons to living in an apartment. One con is all your windows are most likely facing the same direction, and sometimes that direction is north. Oh well! Hopefully next fall we can buy a house again. Let us know how your garden grows!  :)

Our green beans are growing!  We'll see how all of it goes.  We planted seeds and they have been growing like a weed.

I'd like to try cherry tomatoes as well.  With everything going on, the more we can grow and the less we have to shop for, the better it is.

I do not see how these little "green houses" produce enough herb to know you have anything. I plant stuff outside and the plants all get pretty big.  I have seen what you are talking about on Pinterest and always though the pictures seem fake.  I have a couple things growing now and will clip and just dry it so I can use it later.

That is great, I know you will be happy to be able to get fresh herbs straight from your kitchen!

Thank you, renee10, 1imaginarygirl, makeblessed, and pkrahmer!

Kimdud22, you ought to start one for yourself and we can compare notes!

betiynlua, I've wanted to start cherry tomatoes myself! Are you thinking about planting them indoors or outdoors? I've heard of both.

countrygirl12, I am wondering if this is going to work, too. I think I will still have to supplement a lot with the dried herbs from the store, since there's no way these little plants are going to do the job in our kitchen, LOL! Mostly it's just a way for me to grow something indoors, just a hobby. But if I can get some fresh herbs for special gourmet dishes, then it will have been worth it. I'll keep the group updated as to how this all works out.  :clover: :peace:

You will have so much fun watching your things grow, we have a garden and outside and the first thing we do of a morning is check on it.  I also have pots on the front porch.   Going to start collards on the porch this week.

I have some concrete planters on the back walk way and I have grown some stuff there. Some of the stuff gets pretty big. If it is stuff like mint you can dry in a dehydrator. My dill I just let dry on the counter.  I had oregano the past two years and dried it in a dehydrator. It did not come back up this year. I just envisioned the pictures on Pinterest and was thinking LIES-LIES-IT is ALL LIES    If you happen to have something like a bay window you could make shelves and use the smaller flower pots. I guess it could work pretty good if you keep it clipped back. And your cat doesn't eat it. haha  You could get a pot you could keep in the floor and grow some cat nip!

Hey, countrygirl12, you must have read my mind! I actually did plant some catnip in a pot and put it where my cat could reach it, LOL! And, yeah, I may end up putting this whole greenhouse thing outside, because I'm not sure the herb plants are going to get enough light from inside. Let's just say I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one that it actually works. I'll let you all know when I very first see them sprouting up (hopefully). It's going to take at least 5 to 10 days from this past Saturday when I planted them.

And that's so cool that you have a dehydrator! I'm halfway thinking about getting one, because I've thought it would be nice for other things I do in the kitchen as well. The problem would be storing it. We're down to just about zero room in our kitchen!  :peace:

I just did a Google search to see the one you purchased and it looks small. Nevertheless, that sounds like it should be fun to manage indoors! Good luck with your growing!  :clover:
