Any Computer Whizzes on Here? I have a question.
« on: July 08, 2020, 11:22:15 am »
I think i know the answer but I need to know the answer for sure.

I'm having a lot of trouble with Ancestry. I can no longer see the original documents (census, marriages, etc.) on my old XP. i can see them on my laptop using Windows 10 (which I hate). I love my old genealogy data program I use to keep up with documented family, too. I think it's 34-bit (from 2005).

Can I upload the program to the 64-bit laptop?  I so hope so. I love the 2005 program and hate the upgrades. Anyone know if it'll work without any problem?

Anyone know (crossing my fingers)?

You can run a 32-bit program on a 64-bit operating system. Whether the program is compatible with Windows 10, I'm not sure. It won't hurt to try to install it on your laptop. If it doesn't work, you'll still have it on your old XP, right?

Probably not. Does not matter if it is a 64 bit laptop. Has nothing to do with it. I had done my family tree and got back in to as early as 1600s. Went in 4 directions going back from my parent's parents. The program I used to do it is no longer supported. Software has to update to keep up with the Windows versions. I think my software was used with Windows 98.  I still have the program but it will not work with Windows 10. Won't even work with XP which I was able to find a computer with that on it.  SO basically I lost everything.  I had tons of info in that program where you can have notes and stuff.  Everybody I got info from is gone (except maybe one person).  I worked on it for a couple years.  And it is all gone.  I do have a small bit printed out. But back when I done it you did not think about printing everything out.

If the program is supported in Windows 10 though it should work for you.

Thanks for the replies. I certainly hope the program works. I love it. I've been doing the research since 1995 my maternal and paternal side which I still need to expand, my husband's maternal and paternal sides, my son's biological father's side, and I've done a lot for friends. I have everything saved on the hard drive and in Ancestry. I wouldn't attempt it but Ancestry updated and i can no longer see the original documents using XP. I complained to them, thinking it was on their end and they did come back and tell me it was a technical error on their side, but it's been a week and I still can't see any original documents. Transcribed copies seem to have a lot of errors and that's why I need to see the originals.

Keeping my fingers crossed.  :)  Thank you again.

Yes, of course, you can run a 32-bit program on a 64-bit computer, but you should check if your Windows 10 supports that program, if not, then I am sorry, you should downgrade your Windows. Yeah, Windows 10 so far is not the best Microsoft Os, but with their monthly updates, they are trying to improve its quality and to make it work well on all computers that support Windows. Search on the internet for the best pc optimizer, and then you will run Windows 10 even on a computer from 1990.
