New Washer/Dryer

Well, I think I may be buying a new washer and dryer pair in the next several months.  I have a pair now that is only about 9 years old but my experience in getting repairs on any major appliance is that I am paying out so much for the combined service charge and repair that I might as well get some new appliances.

So, have any of you bought a particular brand over the last 5 years that you are particularly pleased with?  What do you like about your purchase?  The only things I have decided upon is that I am buying a top loader because I have received quite a bit of feedback that people don't like the front loaders.  I also want to have a washer with a see-through top to monitor the amount of soap added. I also think that buying ones with all the bells and whistles tend to mean that you just have more to go wrong.

Please tell me about your experiences.

I bought LG both washer and dryer after my 20 years old GE broke down 1 too many times.  I am very satisfied with it, I like the fact that does not have the drum in the middle and I can wash comforters on it.  and it has and eco warm cycle that is very good for water temperature control.  The dryer is very good the only thing that I do not like is that I cannot cry the comforter as good as washing them.  I still need to open air dry them first.

That is a toss up.  Some people like not having the agitator in the middle and some do. I know a woman who bought one at Lowes with no agitator and she hated it so bad she took it back and got one with an agitator. She said it did not get her clothes as clean. Most people don't understand you still have to place to clothes around the sides like there is an agitator in the middle.

A lot of the new ones lock once you start the cycle and you can't stop it.  I know some don't like that.  There are a lot of things to look at that you do not think about now.  Personally I just want something that will get my clothes clean.  I have had my washing machine and dryer for over 20 years and both are still working fine.  The new ones are not built to last like that.

I had a MayTag washer and dryer that were over 50 years old .... I replaced them but they still ran fine ( just not very energy efficient)

Gee, the longest a laundry pair lasted that I have owned was about 12 years.  I have had little luck with washers and dryers lasting and have had a number of brands:  GE, Whirlpool (was the best), and Kenmore among several others. I am thinking about whether or not I want an agitator.

20 years!!! Oh, how I wish.  I have heard people talking about having one 15-20 years but that has never happened to me! I have heard about needing to place the clothes much the same as you do in an agitator washer.  My oldest daughter recently got one without an agitator and told me it makes no difference to her although she can get a king size blanket into it easier!

My husband and I have had a Maytag washer and dryer for the past few years.  After going through the learning curve, in particular, which setting is best for our load, we have had no problems at all.

Our washer is a top loader.  That's what we have been used to.  I've also heard that front loading washers were not liked by some people. The biggest reason was because of a foul odor that develops. So I asked somebody with a front loader why it was not a problem with her.  She said that there is a
small basket-like attachment by the door that has to be taken out and wiped dry.  She actually took it out and showed me. 

When that area is kept dry, there is no settlement of moisture that can build up and cause odors.

I had an old Sears washer for many years.  If I still had it, I'm sure it would be over 30 years old by now.

It was a very simple, basic machine that always got the job done.  I would probably still have that washer if it weren't for the fact that I got married and there was only so much space for appliances in our home.  lol.

Anyhow, it was a fair trade off; I have a wonderful husband and all of our appliances are in great shape.  If anything happens to one of our machines, they can easily be replaced.

I find GE brand to be great. Strong reputation, affordable cost, and they innovate in recent years as well.

They certainly don't make them like they used to. My mothers maytag washer was 20 years and the dryer was 25 years when they were replaced. I replaced my washer and dryer 8 years ago and will be surprised if they last another 5 years!

Placing the clothes is something a lot of people don't know.  Same with stoves.  People buy the glass cook tops and don't realize you cannot do canning on them.  The top will get too hot and crack it.  When I have to replace the washing machine I will likely get one with an agitator again.  I just like those. But you do make a good point - you can wash comforters.  I can wash a reg size comforter in mine but probably could not do a queen size.

I bought a new washer and dryer about 4 years ago.  I bought Maytag, and replace Maytag washer and dryer which were about 20 years old.  Mine does not have an agitator so I can wash big items in it.  The only thing I hate is you can’t stop the washer easy once it’s on.  My old one all I had to do was open the lid.  On this one it locks and you have to hit a button for 3 seconds and it will stop but it still takes about 5 minutes until you can open the lid.

lol Well I know someone who did not know that trick.  They kicked the breaker to get it to stop. I don't like the locking lids. Mine does not lock. You do know why they started doing that don't you? Some kid drowned in a washing machine. I am not sure how that is even possible as it was a pretty good sized kid.  IT was a few years ago.
