Price Gouging
« on: April 01, 2020, 12:10:53 pm »
I have noticed even our grocery store the prices seem higher. I got out yesterday for the first time in 2 and half weeks.  Got what I needed and went on.  Did not study prices.  I did notice the package of eggs were almost $3 which is a huge jump. I had already been told now people are going after the eggs.  Most stores in my area have limited it to one package per person.   ::)

My question is :  I am wondering if anybody has seen price gouging on places like Amazon.  I was looking for something last night that our Walmart is out of and has been out of for a long time and did find it on Amazon....for about 10 times the price it is at Walmart.  It took over an hour going through support but I reported the account.  I know they have closed around 1300 accounts for doing the same thing.  Not sure why this idiot thinks she will get away with it.

Would you report third party sellers on Amazon or sellers on eBay for price gouging? It is not just toilet paper and hand sanitizer now.  Our Walmart shelves are bare.  I have some pictures yesterday of completely empty shelves at 7:00 AM.  This in the food area.  Like a manager friend of mine said - they are going to have to do something to slow people down!

Our neighborhood stores have been practicing responsible retail practices by limiting the purchase of certain items like eggs, toilet paper and hand sanitizer to one or two per consumer. They also seem to be keeping abreast of which items will be upcoming on shortage lists. I don't really have a problem with people charging more for items on sites like Amazon/ Ebay as they are providing hard, or next to impossible items, that are necessities. We buy toilet paper every two months and our last scheduled purchase date was right after everyone started emptying the shelves. We ended up buying a package of toilet paper priced at a three hundred percent mark up. At least we didn't have to go to the store everyday to see if they had gotten what we needed. This virus will definitely change our future purchasing habits and will minimize our dependence on smaller stores even further.

The Attorney General here in Michigan has just issued her second letter to Menard's about price gouging.  I have liked to shop there but am becoming pretty disappointed in them.  I may have to reconsider my use of Menard's when this crisis is over.

As far as the grocer's, I have found less sales and more prices which seem to have increased.  However, on what I usually buy, the prices have only seemed to go up a small amount to this point. I am unsure if there are factors working that I am not aware of, such as the supply chain/logistics.

AVG bottle of hand sanitizer in a Dollar store was $11.I said,"take a hike"to myself.Stuff would have to give u a buzz before anyone bought it.

I bought an avg bottle of wintergreen alcohol instead for $2.50.

Masks were $1.50 apiece.Take a hike on that too.

6 rolls of TP for $7 was ok.

I was not aware of price gouging, but I had a small list at the grocery store yesterday and ended up paying over $145.00 at the checkout. It didn't seem right, but I was not really counting. Maybe I should.  :-\

You do not have a problem with someone clearing the shelves of needed items? Items that cost $1 to $3 at Walmart, assuming they were in stock - and some idiot grabs it all and puts it for sale online for $20 plus dollars and then also wants to charge you shipping to get the items?  I need to look at the thread about the hand sanitizer.  Were you one of the ones complaining about how horrible those two guys were?  Or did you think this behavior was okay?

Would you think it was okay if you needed milk or something for your child or grandchild and "I" grabbed it all and stood in the parking lot and said I will sell it to you for $100? I find it hard to believe you would say oh well that is okay because you are providing me with something I can't get any where else. You would be able to get it some where else, like Walmart, if selfish people did not take it ALL! With the intention of selling it at a jacked up price.  I don't have a problem with people buying what they will use or even stocking up on something that THEY will use themselves. My only problem is when people buy it to sell at extraordinary prices to rip people off.

I notice that, I went to Walmart yesterday and found that their gallon of Milk was $3.79, for the Great Value brand, I pay less than that at Costco and is a bigger size, I usually get the milk at Aldi's or Lidl stores were the prices are better.  But I have notice that every store has raise their prices, it is very frustrating!!  Some people is out of work, can barely manage the little bit of $$ for essentials and the stores are ripping you off.

I saw a pack of 24 rolls of TP for $36, really!! that is outrageous.

I’ve noticed several stores charging more for items than usual.  I get the supply and demand notion, and maybe raising the price a small amount is ok, but not to the extent they have.  With many many people out of work and no income coming in, yes they can sign up for unemployment, it’s hard enough to pay normal prices, it’s impossible to pay these high prices.

Not true. Every one can't sign up for unemployment. Not all jobs offer unemployment. I have worked for more than one that was considered a non-profit organization and when the job ends unemployment is NOT an option. I also disagree with raising prices because of the supply and demand. SO the lower on the totem pole has nothing. It is not going to slow down the ones buying every thing in sight. When or if this is ever over I think it will really change people and how they live.

I agree not everyone can sign for unemployment.  I don’t agree with upping prices, but sadly people will do that to make a quick buck.  It’s hard to try to buy things when you are short of money.  I was going to make an order at Wegmans for a pick up so I wouldn’t have to go in.  Beside the higher prices they charge $25.00 for pickup fee.  No way am I going to pay that fee.

In our local Wal-Mart things seem to be the same as they were before this started.  The question is if you can find what you are looking for.

Greed will out every time.  They know that people need items that are necessary and to include food.  They are just counting on how much more will be going into  pockets.

Well now they are saying there will be food shortages so things will again get worse. Stores need to set major limits on how much you can buy. But they just go out and come back in and check out a diff register. Or work together.  I won't buy from individuals. Esp not when they are charging $70 for a box of cereal.

I haven't noticed price increases at my local Shop Rite but my girlfriend told me that prices are way up at Acme. I haven't noticed increases at amazon yet either.

Yesterday was the first time I had been to the store in over a week.  Things I usually buy up by a dollar from the last time I bought them.  Amazon wow.  the price of tp and longer delivery.  won't be buying that from them.
