It is sad that people get caught up in things like that.  You wonder what’s wrong with them that they fall for things like that.  Or they meet someone on line and the person wants to come here to meet/marry them but needs money to get out of the country, pay a medical bill for family, etc.  And the people send them money.

That's why you can't trust anyone as far as you can throw them.  Especially don't trust people online.

Unfortunately I'm one of 'em. Got jacked out of about $2,800 in my early 20's trying to look for a job online but got scammed.

It is sad that people take advantage of others. These are not stupid people but are people who were looking for more in life whether it was what seemed t be a reasonably priced puppy, helping a friend's son out of jail, a love interest, or a chance to make a few extra dollars. I work in money laundering/fraud investigations and new scams pop up daily. my job is to protect my company by freezing accounts and aid government investigation entities by filing suspicious activity reports. I have seen people lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. In eight years I have only heard of two groups brought to justice and never heard of any victims getting their money back. Going to the police makes them aware of what is going on but the chances of catching the criminals is slim and chances of getting your money back are close to zero.

Yup sadly it does happen and gullible people always fall victim to these types of things.

If people would pay close attention to any red flags that begin to fly, turn on their nose and smell a scam, maybe some of these scammers would begin to run out of business.

It can be hard under some circumstances because scammers are crafty.  But anytime anything is out of the ordinary try to stop, think and ask questions.

My husband occasionally gets those ever so irritating phone calls.  I overheard him interrupting the guy on the other end asking him his name.  When he didn't answer, my husband asked again.  This kept going on until my husband finally hung up.  He was through playing.

I know that this example is a different kind on con but scams, whatever the area of life, are very common.

So sad this really touched my heart that people get so lonely and desperate and that people take advantage of this with their lack of ethics and greed.

I am just so thankful that the Internet wasn't around when I was young and so naive. I'd have probably been scammed out of all of my money (not much) pretty quickly. I'm just so glad that the web didn't start up until I was in my early 30s. Now, at 58, I'm am super skeptical and not likely to fall for anyone's malarkey!  :peace:

I love that you used the word "malarkey." I haven't heard that word in a long time.  It's fits the subject perfectly.  I cringe to think how distracted I would have been from real life if I had had the Internet growing up.
