Over the past year or two, we have mostly been buying our TP at Sams Club where they have the mega packs of 20 or 30 rolls (I'm not sure how many actually is in there). We have limited storage space in our house, so we usually keep the 'backup' on our back porch and just have a few rolls in the bathroom.

So within two days of each other in February I bought a mega pack and then my wife and daughter bought another mega pack. They hadn't realized I bought one already. So we were pretty well set for this run on TP at the stores!

My wife actually considered returning the package she bought and using the returned cash on some other items we needed, but we ultimately decided to keep it because we knew we would eventually use it. It looks like we made the right call there.

My husband was remarking tonight on the toilet paper-buying panic that is going on at the moment in response to the coronavirus. I was a little puzzled at this particular product being bought up so urgently. i can understand water, because you have to have it to survive, but toilet paper? I mean, don't get me wrong, I want to have plenty of toilet paper should we not be able to leave the house for any period of time. But to go out and buy grocery carts full? Anyway, I looked up this phenomenon and psychologists are positing that by people hoarding toilet paper, it gives them some of the control back that they feel they have lost with this pandemic.  :peace:

People are not buying carts full.  That is the thing.  I have talked to cashiers at our Walmart.  Each person buys one or maybe two.  No one is buying 10 to 20 packs.    I don't get the stocking up on tons of water.  Do you not have running water in your home?  Your water to your home is not going to be interrupted.

According to our local paper and our local tv station, some people are buying carts full.  There are pictures of people walking out with 8, 9, 10 packs of TP .  I see nothing wrong with getting 1 or 2 packs but 10?

I have personally been in stores where people have two carts each full of toilet paper rolls. It's actually quite comedic. Take precaution, yes, but don't go into full-blown, overboard panic mode. Plumbers are going to have a field day when the time comes.

"Some people" but not most people.  Most are just buying a couple of packs.  I did venture out to our Walmart this morning and they have absolutely none even though their website says they do.  No, I do not see buying 10 packs unless you only go to town once a year or you are purchasing for a business or organization.  I actually do that and when they need it again I am not sure how I will get it.  I probably will have to try to order it online.  I don't see this getting better in the next few days.

I've always been slightly obsessive about toilet paper, so I already have a good supply.  I was in Walmart yesterday. Their shelves were empty.  A fellow shopper said Costco, Sams Club and Target were all out too.  I, on the other hand, am stockpiling Breadsmith bread and yogurt.

Hint: Use public restrooms- Save a bundle of money on toilet paper, paper towels and hand soap.
That is what many people do to save money. Then, buy only what you need to use at home. You will soon notice the difference.

If I had to walk 2 miles to the nearest public restroom every time I had to pee, I'd never make it in time. Lol!
Even without any emergency, my grandpa always used a coffee can in the garage and emptied it in the yard next to the dog's latest spot.

Well if social distancing becomes mandatory, ie quarantined; or one just doesn't want to go to the store to be around mass amount of people when there is panic -- like now, then toilet paper would be one of the items one would need to pick up I guess.

I understand the madness, Imagine running out of toilet paper with kids & no bidet, no thanks. I started prepping over a month ago.  Some religions prep as a matter of course in their daily lives -- Mormons & LDS -- they keep up to a year supply of goods always. So I guess it is always good to be prepared.

USA imports 2x as much toilet paper as they export, so if imports stop we are over $1 billion worth of toilet paper a year short. Just something to think about :)

Check Home Depot & Lowes if you're looking for toilet paper they carry it & people don't necessary associate them with everyday household supplies.

I do not care what people buy. I have what I need. The only thing that puzzles me is when people run to the store and fight with strangers and buy enough food and whatever else to last for months and then they are still out in town every day.  If you are not going to stay at home then there is no need to stock up on anything.

I totally agree, if you are going to prep for the WuhanVirus & then not practicing social distancing it kind of defeats the purpose.  At what point are you going to restrict shopping, when you are sick? --then it is too late because you've been infected & spreading it for weeks probably.

it seems any time there is a crisis there are always people who panic and start hoarding things. I am having trouble finding disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer. Fortunately for now i have a lot of hot water and soap! :rainbow: :peace:

I had never heard mormons and lds religions have a year worth of prep on hand all the time. It is always good to be prepared. I usually have an extra tp besides the one I am using. That just makes good sense. Depending on where you live people do think of Lowe's and Home Depot.  If you live in a smaller town where you do not have a lot of choices then you think of every where that it is available.  I am not sure I remember seeing tp at Lowe's but I knew they had paper towels. I would think any normal person would have enough food and other supplies in their home at all times to get them through at least 2 weeks.

The problem is not just if you are quarantined but again depending on where you live and reading all the stupid warnings from the cdc who also have said deliveries can be interrupted.  If the trucks are not bringing stuff to the stores then there won't be any stock.  The CDC is a big part of the problem.

Right. But I do not think too many people are staying home because they are sick and do not want to infect others.  If that were the case you would not have a Walmart full of idiots with the flu.  They are too sick to stand unassisted but they are at Walmart breathing all over every thing. smh

Not sure why people keep saying everyone who has items are hoarding them.  I have a couple packages of toilet paper.  I am not hoarding anything.  I have a container of hand sanitizer.  I am not hoarding it.  I have something I need. Even in areas where they are limiting to x number of items it is still running out.  SO you have a ton of people buying this particular item.  There was a woman going off the deep end about "all these idiots buying everything up".  And she says this as she is standing behind her heaped over full buggy of stuff she is "buying up". ::)

Suppose you have an accident and dont make it in time....then you would need a laundromat.

Glad to hear that some states do not have people emptying the shelves into their carts. People are buying cart fulls of water and toilet paper in our neighborhood. Lines have begun forming outside Costco , and Sams, at six in the morning (four hours before the store opens). One of my office mates sat and watched a guy grab seventeen cases of water yesterday before my office mate grabbed the eighteenth and final case and told the hoarder that he should be ashamed of himself. I do not have the time or patience for this-I would not even do it for a concert that I really wanted to see. We know of people that have paid grocery clerks money in order to have a small amount of necessities placed out of reach of the public. Our friends have shared with us as we will do if we are in a position where we see any stock of water and toilet paper. We ordered toilet paper on line, Ebay as Amazon was sold out, the other day at a hefty price. Twelve rolls should hold us for a few months. Our water lines are all filtered and we keep a Brita pitcher in the refrigerator so no worries on water supply.
