From scratch
« on: March 01, 2020, 10:33:01 am »
I started a garden in my house from scraps.  I managed to get an onion to grow.  I took a slice from the center set it in water and it grew.  Beets cut the top off.  Put it in water yes it grew new leaves.  The leaves are edible.  So I will have the leaves and not a root.  But that's ok with me.  Boc cho and celery same thing put in water for a few days then when they looked good everything went into some potted soil.  Oh I also did carrots but I seem to loose those. Maybe I will get it to work this time.  I recently found out that carrot leaves are edible also.  I was just trying to get them to seed.  So in a few weeks I hope to have a salad.   ;)

Wow that is really awesome.  I wish I could grow a garden but disability and a very dangerously sloping back yard puts an end to that idea.  Let us know when you eat that delicious well earned salad.

Wish I could do this but only windows that I have a windowsill on our my bay window in my living and dining room and the my dogs love to lay in them.  Tried using a table in one the bedrooms in the past and it did not work that well.  I do get a lot of sunlight in the house just no where to put the plants

We have grown sweet potatoes and regular potato plants started the same way, we put them in our kitchen garden window.  Have also started avocados and onions to but haven't had good luck with them.

Sounds good, but I could never grow anything and I have tried.  Good Luck with your salad.

I have never grown plants in the house like that. We would go to the local farm and get a handful of veggie plants and make the garden full.

Sounds great, I too have started things, but have never really been able to grow anything for too long. I wish you the best in the project. Update and let us know in a few weeks how it is going.

I never did that, but always had a garden in backyard.  I grow tomatoes, green peppers, onions, broccoli, Brussel sprouts (which never get), and cauliflower.

Did you get an avocado from that plant.  I grew a tree but it never fruited also didn't get a chance before I managed to kill it.

I've been trying celery for a couple weeks now. They used to grow roots but these last two didn't do anything except wilt and turn yellow. I don't know what country they came from as the produce store never has stickers on their produce so I'm thinking they aren't from the USA. They aren't in plastic sleeves like regular stores. I had grown a avocado tree a long time ago (I'm in PA) but it died in our move.

I had a great herb garden before I became disabled and grew Dill almost as tall as me (now 5'3"), lots of basil, 3 kinds of parsley, oregano, and sage. If anyone grows sage, just grow one plant because I had a  4 ft. row and dried the sage leaves. I have enough for another 10 years. Sage and oregano is also a perennial so I got my money's worth. The oregano took 2 years to pop up and i never got the chance to gather and dry the herb before hubby decided to take the garden down.  Now that's I can get around a little better, I'm hoping he will build something or donate a small wheelbarrow so I can garden again since I can't get down to ground level.

Not interested in growing a garden.  Not sure if the soil in my state is conducive to growing a garden.
