That seems like an awful lot of money for a surgery....what exactly does the dog need done?

That's a lot of money....a whole year's salary for some people! I understand the value of dogs

For a lot of people that is more like 3 years of salary.

I would spend whatever I had to save my dog. She is family.

I just had my dog in an emergency hospital for 11 days.  He chewed a string (unknown to us, it was a string from a cat condo).  He wasn’t eating so we took him to our vet, they did an ultrasound and saw the string was wrapped around his intestines and was eating through making 8 holes which were dripping toxins into him.  We had to rush him to emergency hospital and they did immediate surgery.  They cut 8 inches off of the intestines rather than keep him under trying to fix 8 holes.  For awhile no one knew if he would live as he was extremely sick.  Each day he got a little stronger and 5 days later finally started eating (he had 4 IVs going on). 11 days later he’s home and doing good.  We take him back Tuesday for staples removal.  I love him (and all my pets), and I hate to say what this cost us.  Thank God it was no where close to $40,000.

Bless his heart.  There must be a special place in heaven for a person who cares that much for an animal.  I might be one of those people.

It is none of your business.  It is his money and his dog.  That is like saying I should not spend my money on MY dog at the vet but let him die and spend the money on random dogs that I don't have an attachment to to give them a chance to live.  I have spent money at the vet before and been criticized by people I know because they thought I should have used the money for other things.  It comes down to it was my choice.  And with this guy it is his choice.  But he is getting what he wants.  He is getting all kinds of attention.  And I have already seen where a gofundme was mentioned and people are donating like crazy.  He will end up with much more than $45,000.  So he really wins big.

$45,000 for surgery on a dog? That veterinarian should be ashamed.

Why?  You do not even know the whole story.  They have chemo for dogs now.  It is the same as with a person.  It is expensive.  I am curious as to what kind of surgery the dog had.  I am sure it is a set price.  It is your choice whether or not to pursue it.

It's a very specialized procedure for open heart surgery (with a pretty high success rate) which apparently only one doctor in Japan knows how to do. That's why it's so expensive. But I did read that they are training more vets on the procedure, so that should eventually bring the cost down.

Vets bills, this countrys health insurance and funeral costs are just some ways how the vulnerability of people are taken advantage of.

Truly a joke. And then people get mad if you dont stand for the flag or we are free.....JOKE!!!

A yr and a half ago our dog was suffering between me and my spouse that i knew the best thing for her was to put her to sleep. The vet on call in the middle of the night wanted $700.

I prayed to God to help and within 10 minutes our dog took her last breath.Sad as it was id like to think God answerd the prayer.

1 of my in-laws passed away 20 yrs ago.I was in the funeral parlor with my spouse while undertaker was showing caskets.I thought i was in a used car lot.

Truly a joke this world.

My spouse is going for their 3rd back surgery in less then 2 yrs this Thurs. The Dr this time is going to do a fusion and remove the disc.My question is how come you didnt do that in the first 2 surgeries? You got paid 1000s and my spouse was still in lots of pain.OK i realize you can say you tried to avoid it......BUT Geeeshhh...you are the DR...didnt you know that???

Magic Johnson tests positive for HIV almost 30 yrs ago.The guy looks like he might live to be 100.

Great country eh?

You need to calm down, Countrygirl. Just quoting a line from "Gone with the Wind" adapted a bit.
