Friday February 7, 2020 Wear Red for National Heart Day

 :glasses-nerdy:
Please share this and post one of your own to this thread, like to learn new things for 2020 as a New Years Resolution! This could save someone's life and it is said over 100 people a year die from choking on the caps of pens.

There's A Surprising Reason Why Pen Caps Have Holes In Them
The holes at the top of Bic biro pens are there so that, if you swallow one accidentally, you can still breathe and won’t choke to death.
It's debatable whether that last one there is common knowledge or not. A quick Google search of the fact, rewritten as a question, reveals articles addressing this point going back several years, with the latest (re)appearing just this week over on ScienceAlert. We suppose it’s one of those things that comes up from time to time, like what would happen if you nuked Yellowstone (not much, as it turns out).
If you jump over to Bic’s website, under their FAQs, it quite clearly states: “The reason that some BIC® pens have a hole in their cap is to prevent the cap from completely obstructing the airway if accidentally inhaled. This is requested by the international safety standards ISO11540, except for in cases where the cap is considered too large to be a choking hazard.”

Don't really know how useful that bit of information is but I'm more interested to know how common must choking on a pen cap be for hole to be put in it at all.

I'm glad you mentioned Friday, February 7, 2020 Wear Red for National Heart Day, an awareness campaign to end heart disease and stroke.  If you know someone (as I do) who has been affected by heart disease, don't wait until the month of February to open up discussions to close the gap of awareness.

American Heart Association lists these moments in the history of the naming of February as a federally designated month for heart health:

American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is an ideal time to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and communities involved.

-The first American Heart Month, which took place in February 1964, was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson via Proclamation 3566 on December 30, 1963.

-The Congress, by joint resolution on that date, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating February as American Heart Month.

-While American Heart Month is a federally designated month in the United States, it’s important to realize that cardiovascular disease knows no borders.

Turtle (also called American Turtle) was the world's first submersible vessel with a documented record of use in combat. It was built in 1775 by American David Bushnell as a means of attaching explosive charges to ships in a harbor, for use against Royal Navy vessels occupying North American harbors during the American Revolutionary War. Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull recommended the invention to George Washington, who provided funds and support for the development and testing of the machine.

Several attempts were made using Turtle to affix explosives to the undersides of British warships in New York Harbor in 1776. All failed, and her transport ship was sunk later that year by the British with the submarine aboard.Bushnell claimed eventually to have recovered the machine, but its final fate is unknown. Modern replicas of Turtle have been constructed and are on display in the Connecticut River Museum, the U.S. Navy's Submarine Force Library and Museum, the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, and the Oceanographic Museum (Monaco).

Blighted bar slated for demolition discovered to be an antique log cabin from 1700s

Video is here:

WASHINGTONVILLE, Pa. (Video from WNEP via CNN) —
A blighted bar in an eastern Pennsylvania town was on the brink of being demolished until a contractor pulled back a few layers and discovered something much more historic.
It was a centuries-old log cabin, covered beneath layers of siding and other modern construction, WNEP-TV reported.

An official estimates the building could be from the 1700s.
"Going through the building, there were some beams in the back of the old bar room that we wanted to salvage because they were so beautiful," Washingtonville Mayor Tyler Dombroski told The Daily Item newspaper. "As the contractor started to peel off the additions to the building from over the years, we started to see exposed beams and then the entire log cabin. Everybody’s jaws dropped."

The Washingtonville, Pennsylvania bar was condemned three years ago.

Washingtonville is located about 75 miles southwest of Scranton.
Officials would like to preserve the cabin and move it to a different location, according to reports.
