hack berries
« on: November 20, 2019, 09:45:39 pm »
I have a problem with renegade trees.  This ugly tree has been reproducing in my yard for years.  Never new what it was but ugly.  I have lived here for 19 years, this year I seen for the first time what this tree produces.  Hack Berries.  So I looked it up.  Started with a photo to a plant site.  came back hack berries.  Now take the time to look up Hack Berries.  Among many things Hackberry milk.  Yes like almond milk.  I never drank any other kind of milk that doesn't come from a cow.  I went a head a tried it.  Not bad.  The problem with hack berries is that the fruit is so thin and small that it would take a whole tree just to get a good taste.  There is more nut than the fruit surrounding the nut.The Nut itself is very hard to bite.  Now if the wild life doesn't get the berries before you do. The berries will stay on the tree long after the leaves fall off.  You will have berries for the better part of winter.  I have taken about 1/4 cup ground them in a coffee grinder fruit and all.  Added some water shook it up and strained it.  And drank the (milk)  It is good and very good for you.  It does take a lot of time to collect the berries.

I've never heard of them before.  I looked them up (I don't find them particularly ugly)  the berries do sound interesting.

We use it for firewood, makes a nice fire and holds the heat.

I have never heard of a hack berry tree. Just goes to show you're never too old to learn something new. You were very brave to try the hack berry milk. Too bad it takes so many berries to make a glass, LOL! For some reason your hack berry story reminded me of when I was young and the many crab apple trees that grew in my neighborhood. Us kids would eat them, but never too many as they would make you sick to your stomach! Those were the good old days...  :peace:
