New Brakes on SUV

My SUV has been making a sound only when I turn left.  Since it is still under warranty I wanted it taken to the dealer to be checked.  My husband insisted it was the brakes and they are not covered under the warranty (which I know).  So we took into the dealer and sure enough it was the brakes.  They wanted $812 to replace the brake pads and install new rotaries.  Thankfully my husband is handy and loves to work on cars and it only cost us $127.00.  So glad I have husband that is handy.  He has save us so much money over the years.

How in the world could they justify almost $1000 to put brake pads on a vehicle?

Justify if you cannot someone to do it for you and ensure you and your families safety when driving.  If my husband was not around I would have spent the money to save my life and the life of others

Not sure where the attitude is coming from!  Was actually agreeing with you and somewhat defending you.  There IS no way it would cost $1000 for that job.  Not even parts and labor.  You were getting ripped off and would be foolish to pay that much.  Go somewhere else.

You have to remember that if you are replacing rotors the bill will be much higher, especially depending if you happen to need all four replaced.  This is usually not the case.  Each brake pad replacement adds to the cost.  If you only have to replace two of them, the cost is always less than if you have to do all four of them.  We have to talk apples and apples for cost comparisons!

I have replaced brakes as well as rotors (never both front and back and the same time) but either way it was no where near even $500 for just the front of the back.  This for parts only as we do our own repair work.  But still there is a set price per labor hour.  If parts were $200 you would have to be charged about $700 an hour to come up with a total price of $900. 

Even if I were not going to use them I would ask some serious questions about how you are coming up with a price that high.  A brake job is not that big of a deal.

It doesn't matter how worn down the pads are. You replace the entire brake pad.  Even if you let it go too long and had to replace the rotors it would not cost this much.  I think a lot of repair people, especially dealerships, will really jack up the price if you let them.  I have had people try to do that to me. 

I don't remember what it was for but I had called and got a quote and it was UNREAL high.  I asked what the hourly rate is and they told me.  I already knew apx price for parts.  He got really mad when I told him I knew how much the parts were and the apx time it should take to do the job.  So where is all this extra money coming from?  As time goes on I am getting more and more to where I ask questions.  Whether it is a situation like this or just some bs story.

I agree dealer prices are outrageous but if you do not have a family member to do it for you, you can always shop around for a good autoshop, there are very decent out there that will do the same job for a lot less.  Just need to ask and get referrals.  I have a couple of places to go and take care of my car (my husband does not know how to do it) and their charges are a lot more reasonable that those dealers

If you live close to where there is a school where they teach auto mechanics you can sometimes get it for just the price of parts.  And you have a teacher who knows what they are doing (most times the others do as well just trying to get a certificate or something).  There is one a couple towns over from me and I know people who have taken things there.  You may have to know someone.  Idk.  We know one of the teachers.

My husband does the same thing, if he can fix it on the car such as brakes, oil, etc, he will do it just to save some money. What dealerships and mechanics charge now a days is outrageous.

car maintainece (or however you spell this)  is so expensive! im looking into buying my first car but dont want to deal with etting the breaks done or engine fixed or anything else. not to mention having to buy gas all of the time oh gosh.

My husband and dad can do some mechanical things but not the big stuff.

Wish my husband was good on cars. We spent thousands over 10 years of owning a Chevy truck. It's gone now but would of been nice to have him do some card work. My son has a Ford escape so far so good it's a 2005 so something will go wrong soon.

Most important check on a auto;I have them check at oil changes and inspection just in case. Is cheaper to fix when it is not fully worn out. Never spent that much; local garage costed $300 or so ona 02 malibu.
