We have a coal and wood stove now but being in our 70s, it's getting harder for us to bring the coal in, take the ashes out and then with this stove, if the weather isn't quite right, it is hard to get it to burn. I take care of the stove since I'm here all the time. Some days it's too hot and other days, it doesn't get hot and never burns well. Just can't regulate it.

We've been looking into a pellet stove because our son has one but then hubby thinks it is almost as bad as coal because of the pellets. So yesterday, I was researching gas/propane stove because they have an optional remote control. Hubby thinks we need that because of my disability. He doesn't want me getting up all the time to change the temperature up or down.

I told him this is not the time to buy but he wants to go ahead anyway before we have the really cold weather.  So, does anyone use a gas/propane  stove to supplemental your main heat?

You have to consider the CO2 content in your room/house.
I would rather use an electric space heater...other heating
    systems are simply too risky.

Sorry  no coal or propane, but we do have a electric fireplace in the family room.  The room is below ground level so it gets a little chilly in the winter and the fireplace does it job when I am down there but we don't use it that often unless it is below zero here.

UPDATE: We have the stoves down to 2. Truthfully, they scare me, especially the price and the amount of venting needed. We have an outside furnace and in the living room, we have the coal & wood stove which will heat the whole house if power goes out, plus radiant heater just for the living room now, but the heater doesn't do a very good job. Plus i keep thinking about the electric bill it may cost.

Then there's the amount of time we'd use a propane stove; only about 1-2 months in the fall and in the spring. Don't know if it's worth it. The coal & wood stove could take care of it IF I would open the window or door because it gets too hot in here a lot of times, and other times it gets cranky and doesn't want to stay lit. The outdoor furnace is wonderful, too, last winter, we had all the radiators turned off except for the baseboard in the dining ara. It heated the whole great room but he doesn't start it until "winter" (when the temps are in the 30s-40s during the day.

I'm weighing all the pros and cons and still can't decide.  :(

Space heaters are dangerous. Why not just use electric heat like a central heat and air unit.

I have been seriously considering one of those electric space heaters that look like a dish and heat a smaller area very well. They say they are low power consumption, but they can send out heat that really feels good up close.
