Vaccines
« on: September 11, 2019, 01:06:37 pm »
I know there was a big discussion/argument  :)  about this on here a while back.  I am NOT talking about kids.  I am talking about YOU as an adult.  Do you run get all the new vaccines they are shoving on everybody these days.

I know they suggest the flu shot (which is a vaccine) that people get it every year.  I have also seen where they have a pneumonia vaccine (which is stupid and I don't even know how they could vaccinate against that) ...

And now I have seen where Walgreens is also making available and I assume it is recommended to get a vaccine for:
Hepatitis
Shingles
HPV  - Among others

I even saw yesterday where they have a Typhus Vaccine.   ::)

No I do not get all the vaccines they come out with.  I have heard so many people talk about the Flu vaccine that they take it and then get the Flu.  The only one I have taken is DPAT and that was because I started keeping my grandson when he was an infant.

Last year almost every I know that took the flu shot got sick either right after taking the shot or they got the flu. One died from it.  I have heard of the DPAT but do not know right off what it is.

The Typhus vaccine got me.  I am thinking who is going to run get this.

I've gotten a flu shot every year for about the past 10-15 years. I've maybe had the flu once in that span, but even that may have been just a bad cold. I've never gotten sick from the shot itself. But some people do get sick from it. So I'm not going to criticize anyone's decision in favor or against it.  In my mind, it has been worth it for me - is all I'm saying.

I know that some people mistakenly believe that a flu shot is meant to prevent what many people refer to as stomach or intestinal flu - with vomiting and diarrhea. But that is something completely different to my understanding.

Then WHAT is the flu shot?  I thought they were saying the flu shot was suppose to keep you from getting the flu?

I know last year some people got mad at me because I refused to take it.  Well then stay away from me.  No problem dumb butt.  You took the shot so you should be protected. lol  I have never had either.

I think the flu shot is for influenza, which has the fever, runny nose, muscle aches, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, headache symptoms.  The "intestinal flu" is not really the flu at all - it's just that many people have come to call it that.

If there are any medical knowledgable people here and I have this wrong, please jump in and correct me. But I understand these as two completely different things each independent of the other. So the flu shot will not have any effect on preventing stomach cramps, vomits, and runny poops - but the other aches, pains and associated fevers are what the shot is targeting.

Hubby and I volunteer at the ministry  and I more so then him am with and around a lot of people who may or may not bring the  flu into the building. So I get my shot and then hop we don't catch a cold from some one. But I have not  had the flu in years  nor has hubby.  Some of the shots I don't  take.  then pray I don't get sick.

Same here and have never any problems with the flu shot.  Also got the DPAT when my niece had her baby so we could go see her.  My niece is a nurse and insisted that if wanted to see the baby you had to have it.  Too many infants can get whooping cough and it can be fatal

I could be off, but I think I've heard that there are multiple strains of flu floating around and the shot only protects you from the one they think is most prevalent or most likely to get you. Not sure. I only remember getting one flu shot, and got the flu too, so I don't see much point in bothering again.

I'd consider a shingles vaccine because of warnings I've heard wailed from those who've had it. I have to read more about it though. Basically one-time things, diseases, yes. Recurring small time stuff like flu, nah I'll just risk it.

The only vaccine I have gotten as an adult is a tetanus shot, which I don't know if that's a true vaccine or not. My husband gets the flu shot every year because his workplace offers it for free, but I have never gotten one. I've never had the flu either, at least I don't think I have. I'm not sure about all these adult vaccines and just avoid them.  :peace:

I have had the awful consequences of getting the flu after getting a flu shot once. Fever, chills, muscle aches and pains, and high temperature. I couldn't even get out of bed if I wanted to...never got a flu shot after that.  I don't get out anymore and I'm especially never in crowds so I am not worried about getting the flu or pneumonia.

As for the Shingles vaccine, if you never had the chicken pox, you're not necessarily ever going to get Shingles. I didn't so I'm not willing to get a vaccine I really don't need. As for HPV, I understand that's only for teens. That's what the commercials seem to state. Get your teen the HPV vaccine.

My mom had the most severe case of shingles on her neck and shoulder (she did have chicken pox as a child) said her doctor that he even took photos for examples to others. She was hospitalized for almost 2 weeks and wound up with neuralgia in that shoulder for the rest of her life. It was so painful that no pain meds helped. Vioxx was just out at that time and it helped her, but then wa recalled. After that, no help at all.Doc wouldn't prescribe Oxy or anything else. She would cry every day. That's when she decided she would rather die than put up with that pain for years and she deteriorated after that. She was in constant pain for 4 years.

I only get the essentials - what my DR. recommends.  I did have a friend who had shingles and saw her suffer, so got that one.  I don't want to go through what she did.
