Survival Job

I've had a difficult time job hunting over the past few months so I finally had to get a survival job at a deli in a grocery store so I can pay bills without going broke. When I'm not doing that, I'm trying to start up a freelance business and write/sell my own play scripts and writing.

Anybody else working a survival job right now? If so, how are you staying positive while working a job you really aren't passionate about?

You're doing the right thing doing jobs that isn't your dream jobs. Me, I just try to live off my husband's pension & budget the monies so I can survive each month without going into welfare or government assistance. Don't give up & good Luck!

Thanks. I struggle with feeling like a failure for being another person not using their college degree. That's why I'm starting my own business. I'm really hoping that I can eventually transition to doing more of that and less work in the survival job. Fingers crossed.

good luck to you. my daughter worked at a store for years .She liked it ncause she liked people. maybe don't think of it as a survival job.

Ironically, I work in a deli/bakery.  I however and doing what I love most every day.  I have a niche and work as a cake decorator.  Honestly if I didn't have the creative outlet I may not be in retail today.  I hear a lot of people say what your saying. Most are young.  And aren't looking to make serving salads and slicing meat and cheese as a full time career.  My son also works in the same store as me.  He's now a department head and making more $$$ than me at 19.  He says it's just a job.  He played his cards right to get the promotion at such a young age.  Keep on honing in your passion.  Who knows you may land something within the company you work for with your freelancing.

I think that freelancing for the company i work for now is unlikely. It's a chain so they have a corporate headquarters that does the work that I am trying to do. It's a nice thought, though. However, I found that I like working in the cheese shop portion of the deli better and a new position may be opening up there in the near future.

I guess I've never thought about it like that, but that's a really good idea. Attitude is everything and maybe changing my thinking process going in could make a world of difference. Thanks for the advice!

You can't just go "in to welfare".  You have to qualify.  If you do not have dependent children and do not have disability you aren't going to get much help.  And even if you did they will take off for the check you get for his pension.

Now if you are on disability or have kids you can live pretty good on welfare.

I don't know why you would think you are a failure for not using your college degree.

Hopefully things will work out for you in starting your own business.  I remember years ago I worked on a job I absolutely hated and a co-worker, who I also went to high school with, telling me ...  Just start your own business.  I wanted to punch her. lol   Starting your own business is not that easy.  If it was then every person in the world would just start their own business, watch the money roll in, and work very little.

You do what you have to do to survive.  You are not a failure because you took a job you did not want to take.  A lot of people have done that over the years of time.

I think the feeling like a failure comes when I see others my age in careers they have worked for. I'm trying not to compare myself to them, but still. Anyway, my business is a freelance service that I intend to register legally to enjoy the tax breaks and appear more professional. I won't actually have a brick and mortar location so that might make the process slightly easier to start. The hard part will be finding clients.

I started out in a restaurant after I graduated from college.  I learned alot about people and customer service and employee satisfaction that actually went to good use in my chosen field of work.

Survival jobs are not easy, but we have to do what we can to pay the bills sometimes. I hope you and others who have a survival job can find your way out soon because I know.

I knew what you meant.  And maybe that will be easier. Yes finding clients is the hard part.  Depending on where you live as to how easy it would be.  Don't ever compare yourself to anyone else.

A job is a job there is no need to be ashanmed or feel like you are not doing the right thing. Money is the same color no matter what job you do just try your best to use it as best you can. This job is just a stepping stone to a much brighter future. Best of luck to you!

Never be picky about a job it could lead to bigger and better things. At least your getting paid regardless unless you quit work like my friends aunt did and had no back up plan. She lost her house her car and a lot of other stuff because she was too picky about what type of job she thought she should have. Its better to have something then nothing
