Do Puppies grieve?

I thought about this yesterday with the kid at church that died in the auto accident.  She had a dog.  There are pics of her and her dog on Facebook.  Her dog will wonder why she never came back home.  I have wondered if pups miss their mom when they are taken away.  Or if the mom's miss their puppies.  I guess they get over it quickly.

There have been things that have proved that dogs miss their owners when they die.  Even cats.  I know a guy that took a cat that was given up because the owner had to go to a nursing home.  The cat was severely depressed for a long time.  He done everything to make the cat as happy as possible.  And finally it started to come around.  Animals do have feelings.  And I think they do feel things when their owners disappear from their lives as well as furmates.

As a puppy she will sleep a lot like a baby would.  She may feel her mother, but you are her family now and will take the place of her mother.

Pets do grieve for their owner or their babies.  My next door neighbor just passed away 2 days ago and his dog is going crazy.  He cries for his owner daily and I feel so sorry for her.  She looks like she is completely lost with no where to go.  She does have her owner's son to take care of her and he is trying his best.

I am not so sure and would think that the grieving is probably displaced by all of the attention and loving that a new puppy gets. We had two Golden Retrievers up until July fifth (one was nine and the other was eight). The eight year old succumbed to a heart tumor. My nine year old was good for a week and has had the, somewhat unwanted, company of my son's dog. She does appear to be grieving and grasping the idea that he will not be returning: moving around slower, sleeping more, sitting in all of his favorite spots around the house, and yesterday she was snuggling with one of his favorite toys. They had been best friends for eight years so I am somewhat sure the impact is kicking in. We are giving her more love and attention than ever before-I am working from home twice a week and my wife is working from home three times a week but the signs are still there. We have talked about getting another puppy to liven her up but my wife goes on vacations/plays tennis quite a bit while I am working alot.

Im sure if dogs were ABLE to grieve you might have one running for president now.Some of these candidates dont even have instinct.

Just might be an improvement!

I know dogs grieve because when we lost one of our dogs the other one definitely grieved.

I believe they do, at least feel a sense of loss.  I've seen videos of dogs that appear to grieve the death & stay by their dog friend after their buddy has been hit by a car. I've seen dogs that grieve their owner's death & sit by their grave or casket.   My own dogs initially felt a sense of loss when they were first separated from their mother; & they definitely look for their partner when one of the dogs is missing (for dr visits or whatever) & they are definitely excited when their dog buddy is back

I would have formerly thought not but friends of ours had a mother and son and the mother dog died and they say the dog left behind is definitely grieving.  He doesn't want to eat and just lies around.  Sad if so

Animals grieve.  They certainly do.  I remember when our german shepherd was dying from natural causes and how the neighbors dog knew, I don't know.  They have a sixth sense.  The neighbor's dog starting howling non stop.  It was such a sad, howl.
