Flexible Hours

What does this mean to you?  If you were looking at the help wanted ads in the local paper and you see an ad and it says part time, flexible hours - what do YOU think this means?

I always thought it meant I as the employee would be able to work when I was available.  You the employer will work with the person applying.  I think I have had it wrong all this time.  Most fast food places say flexible hours but you work when they want you to work.  They don't work around your schedule.

I saw an ad a few days ago for a job and it's main point was "flexible hours" and I thought this meant, again, you can work when it is best for you. But when you get the application packet it has set hours and says you may be required to work more hours if they tell you to.  So I am assuming that "flexible hours" means YOU the employee must be flexible to work when ever they want you to be there.

So if you saw that in a help wanted ad what would you have thought it meant?

I think the companies who use this slogan use it to their advantage.  But I am thinking it means YOU have to be flexible.  Not that THEY are flexible.  Which is the way I always thought it was.

That doesn't really answer my question or make any sense. 

I think it means different things to different people or different companies.

You are correct! It is YOU that must be flexible, not the business!

I am going through the same thing with the part time job that I just started. Flexible hours are only flexible if it fits into the shifts they already have set up. For me this means that I can only work afternoons and evenings and the same hours on the weekends. I don't mind this, but I wish there were day shifts available so that I could stay involved with community theater like I want to be.

Right. To me when I see a job ad and it says "flexible hours" I take that to me THEY are flexible not "I" have to be flexible and the hours will always vary but now that makes sense.

Pretty much means youll be free often it even seems like specifically times that would be considered unusally like easy in the morning or late at night.

I think that's it.  I have had it wrong all these years. lol.  It means YOU the employee need to be flexible and you will work random sporadic hours.  I know at Walmart they will schedule people to get off at 11:00 pm or later on Friday night then schedule them to be there at 7:00 am on Saturday morning.  Which makes no sense at all.

I have never worked flexible but I would agree that it is flexible for the employer

I am not taking or looking at this job.  And you are wrong about that.  A few years ago I was working a job and was trying to get a 2nd job and the 2nd job offered "flexible hours" but obviously it meant we want YOU to be flexible.  Because they said they would not work around another job.  smh

lol Yeah that is what I am thinking.  I just always in the past when I saw that thought it was for the employee.  We will work with you around your schedule. But no, it means you need to be flexible to work whenever they want you to be there.  In this day and time people can't always do that.  Esp when they are trying to work 2 jobs.
