You could be entitled to $125 or more from Equifax
« on: July 27, 2019, 04:06:08 am »
It's a pittance for all of the potential damage that could result from it, but about 147 million people are entitled to take part in a class action settlement of at least $125 from Equifax if your personal information was included as part of their 2017 data breach. Both my wife and I were eligible and requested our settlement payments yesterday. To determine if you are part of those affected, you have to enter your last name and last six digits of your SSN into an online form and then complete a short questionnaire.

Not a 'survey' like those of us here are used to, but if you get past the initial demographic query - it is a guaranteed $125 minimum payout for a few minutes of input. (You also have to wait quite a while for the payout - but when is anything instant these days!)

Take a look to see if you are eligible as I expect many of us here are.  https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-get-equifax-settlement-money/

Also there is an alternative option of signing up for free credit monitoring rather than receiving the $125 payout. But if you get your credit reports at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ every year and regularly check your credit score at https://www.creditkarma.com for any negative treatment (both free) it is probably worth putting the additional $125 into your pocket.

DISCLAIMER: If you take part in this settlement you will forfeit your right to bring any separate independent lawsuit against Equifax for any damages caused to you by their data breach. But the time, expense, and hassle in prosecuting that independent claim might make it not worth the effort.

Thanks! Some else forwarded this to me too, so it is legit and worth it in my opinion. The $125 will be nice!

Takes less than a minute to see if you qualify... really simple.

I wasn't impacted, which actually was a good thing :)

Thanks for posting.

I heard about the data breach, but I am not going to look into it because I know it will upset me because they took your information without your consent, to begin with, and then they put you at risk for fraud. They should have paid out more than $125. Your information is never really safe no matter what.

You should know if you qualify.  This breech was 2 plus years ago.  Unless you had someone open credit in your name or had fraudulent charges on your credit card or something you know happened then you aren't going to qualify.

You are not going to get a check just because you submitted a claim.  You have to qualify.  If you were not effected by the breech you will not be getting any money.

They did not take your info without your consent.  If you have a credit card or anything else such as working or filing taxes, or ever have a loan it is reported to the credit agencies.

There was a breech.  Someone hacked in to the system and got info on people.  If you were not directly impacted in a negative way you are not going to get $125. You aren't going to get anything. And it has been 2 plus years, if you were impacted you should know it.  You do not need to put your last name and last 6 digits of SS in to this site (giving your info to someone else LOL) to see if you qualify for the rebate.

That's not 100% accurate. If your information was part of that data breach and is "out there" you may not have suffered any identity theft or credit damage yet. But that does not mean that you aren't entitled to the $125 settlement.  There are other steps where you can make a claim for up to $20,000 in additional damages (with appropriate proof and documentation), but if your info was part of the breach - you can get the $125 just by completing the claim form.  If your data was NOT compromised, then you are not entitled to the $125.  If your data was compromised, you can get either the $125 OR free credit monitoring for a certain period of time.

$125.00? What a pittance...because Equifax owes me more than that amount!

I had to enter the last six numbers of my ssn and they said I qualified, which I already knew because they had informed me of my info being stolen months ago.

Well yea, some people think they just need to file the claim and they will be paid. I didn't receive any notification of my info being breached so I guess I don't qualify
