Flavored Cigarettes Ban in the US
« on: October 10, 2009, 07:14:00 pm »
Ok, so I've been smoking since I was 12 and then discovered clove cigarettes when I was 19 in college.  I'm 34 now and my primary choice has been clove cigarettes since then.  (I have quit for as much as a year before and smoked the occasional Marlboro but not primarily)  Now, Obama signs into law the "Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act" which now bans all flavored cigarettes, excluding menthol, from being sold in the USA.  After my initial shock and dismay, I have discovered that it will not be illegal for individual persons to obtain them nor use them in the USA, just that they cannot be imported for retail sale.  Now, while I'm sure there's some logical explanation to that about the flavors being more attractive to the younger crowds, etc, etc, some of us are just loyal and aren't quite ready to just throw in the towel or revert to standard cigarettes just because the government says so.  So...I'm reaching out here for 1) feedback always good, interesting & potentially educational especially if anyone else feels my pain and 2) any resources that any can recommend, preferably via internet, where I can get clove cigarettes (1st choice is Djarum, but I'm open on brand) ordered by the individual carton.  For those non-smokers who would like to rail against smoking altogether, please, there are other threads out there and for the diehard smokers, we're not really listening anyway because, well, we *WANT* to smoke.  Please help though if anyone has info.   ???

Don't care.  If your choice to smoke only effected you, I'd stand up for you.  But it doesn't (and I'm not just talking about secondhand smoke) and I see no harm in banning something that is basically inherently negative toward other citizen's freedoms.

But by saying so, aren't you inherently agreeing with a ban on another citizen's freedom?

Just popping in with my 2 cents.  Point is, it might be bad for the user and all of us around him/her, but it's still a freedom of choice that I defend with pride everyday.   :)

No flame intended! Just a difference of opinion.

Your freedoms end where mine begin, so no.  Mine begin where I don't have to breathe your nonsense and where my tax dollars aren't funding your medical procedures that you couldn't afford because you blew your money on suicide sticks.

agreed :)  and your freedoms began when I swore to defend your right to have them.  America is a GREAT country.  I love freedom of speech!!!!
And I thank you for your OPINION.   Would you mind your tax dollars being spent on my funeral if I died defending your freedom of speech?

 :dontknow:

again, No Flame Intended!

I love "discussions" :)

I do NOT want the government to control EVERYTHING nor do I need them to tell me what is good and/or bad for me.

If smokes should be "banned" then cars, motorcycles, extra hours at work, ladders etc. should be "banned" - they kill more people in this country than smokes.

Yes - I smoke and am not starting a flame - just dont need Uncle Scam to be my daddy, I already have one  :)

Try this http://www.myclovecigarettes.com/ I hope this helps I don't smoke clove cigarettes myself but I'm pretty good at finding resources for things online (people call me all the time to look for things for them) so I thought I would look for you real quick, and as far as I can see it has the brand you prefer and everything if not I hope that it leads you to something that does.

If smokes should be "banned" then cars, motorcycles, extra hours at work, ladders etc. should be "banned" - they kill more people in this country than smokes.

Let's put that to the test ;)

Auto accident deaths - averages around 42-45,000/year in the US
Extra hours at work - ???  When did that become a common cause of the death...I won't even entertain that idea
Ladders - averages about 14/year in the US

Tobacco use - averages around 440,000/year in the US

--Around 87% of lung cancer in the US is attributed to tobacco use
--Around 30% of all cancer in the US is attributed to tobacco use

The numbers speak for themselves, but I'll go on.

Let's see where automobiles fit in with our society.  It's not hard to figure out why it would be a negative thing if all auto transportation was banned.  Our economy would simply plummet beyond all comprehension.  The global economy would follow the US's until stabilization came about (which could take decades to be frank).  Every single thing about our lifestyle would change drastically, and mostly for worse.

The other things you mentioned are just nonsensical comparisons.  Not even relevant at all to the discussion and not worth talking about.

I just spoke to a friend in the business and he said I was off a little in my response.

Obesity is #1 in responsibilty for deaths in America.

We should ban McD's & Dunkin Donuts  :)

I beleive it is a personal choice . This is supposed to be a free country.

I'm speaking to you.  Why don't you explain your response instead of telling me I should go speak to someone else in order to understand what you said?

Frankly, I think I understood what you said pretty clearly.  Your argument is the generic slippery slope fallacy that, as usual, yields nothing useful in the discussion.

Please do.

Again, your freedom ends where someone else's begins.

I dont have the time to gather the info to post exact details. (I work full time - 45 hrs. wk & family)

Obesity leads to heart, liver, kidney, brain, eye ball etc. disease that causes deaths in the USA.

Much more than smokes :-)

Actually booze causes way more deaths :-)

My point - I dont need nor want "Uncle Scam" telling how to live my life - and - I dont buy the statistics :-)

It's actually probably fairly similar in numbers, although I'm perfectly fine with fast food chains that make little effort to provide healthy food items being shut down.  Would save quite a lot of money and trouble for everyone.

No it doesn't.  On average in the US, a little over 100,000 deaths/year are attributed to alcohol consumption.

Please check what you say before throwing false statements out.

It doesn't really interest me if you buy them or not...I checked multiple sources on the numbers before I posted them.  If you have something that shows my numbers are ridiculously far off, feel free to post it.  I'd love to see it.

Booze causes car wreacks that kill others than the drunk themselves, battered women, violent domestic issues of all kinds, stupid decisions like "I should drive a boat right now" - or - "I think it would be a good idea to eat the chicken anyway - I wont get salmonila" etc.

Please use stats that are all incompassing - not just people who die from liver failure from drinking themselves to death but also the people that die from their poor/ignorant decision/choices.

Everyone in this country should realize that its not rights that matter most - its responsibility.

Its not a democracy but republic that was established.

If we contine to expect the government to legislate morals, reasonable, commen sense responsibilties and tell us what is good and/or bad we are truly on a slippery slope.

Peace & chicken grease - out
