Blackberry Winter
« on: May 15, 2019, 04:29:40 am »
We are going through Blackberry Winter here in northeastern KY.  I noticed all the blackberries were in bloom this past weekend so that must be why we are having a cold snap.  My grandparents used to talk about all the "winters" (redbud winter, dogwood winter, blackberry winter etc.) when we would experience cold snaps during the spring.  Blackberry Winter is the last one to endure before it gets hot and stays muggy.
Have a wonderful day!

Maybe.  Maybe not.  I remember a few years ago it was pretty cool a few days way up in July.

Interesting - I'm not familiar with Kentucky.  I also wish I had known my grandparents so I would have learned little tidbits like this.

This isn't a Kentucky thing.

Where I live we don't have a specific name for these cold snaps in spring, but we typically have one every year. This time it happened in May when it usually happens in April. Warmer weather I could enjoy. Muggy/humid not so much.

Where I am it is warm so it really isn't noticeable.

Weather has gotten very weird around here.  After days of 70s, the forecast is close to freezing on Sunday night.  Ugh!

Where do you live?  I honestly thought these names for the cold or cool snaps was kind of a thing known throughout the country.  Well except for places like California where it never really gets cold any way.

I love blackberries. However it seems they don't grow as plentiful around here like they use to.
