Groundhogs obviously can't predict the weather, though I think it's a fun little tradition and I'm proud to be from the groundhog's home state.

I don't pay any attention to the Ground Hog's "predictions".  It seems silly to me, but it has been a tradition for many years.  No harm in it.

After all the media attention, how could Punxsutawney Phil compete with a credible meteorologist one might ask?

Well, deputy weather editor & meteorologist of the Washington Post trashed P. Phil's predictions as a "stain on the profession."  Her concern is people really believe him!  In her column written on the "weather holiday" known as Groundhog Day she points out that this furry weather person representing you [on Feb. 2] has the brain the size of a golf ball and occasionally bites.  According to the NWS, they consider 70% to be their accuracy level and find the general warming trend consistent and likely to continue for next 3 months, except the Ohio and Tenn. valleys are likely to have a longer winter ahead.

rather like those groundhogs, had one in my yard for years, he was friendly and fun to watch!  definitely take that over the swamps in Florida!

So is a rabbits foot.If i hang it outside and it gets wet its raining.If it goes side to side its windy.And the poor rabbit isnt even alive.Hows that for predicting?

I was raised to always watch the Ground Hog to see if he would see his shadow or not. I really do not believe this, but I Love to see this happen every Year.
