Do You Still Believe the Groundhog Day Saying?
« on: February 02, 2019, 12:10:05 am »
I decided to start a discussion like this because it’s Groundhog Day now (as of this post). As I used to hear/read, winter would last six (6) more weeks in the Northern Hemisphere if a groundhog saw its shadow. I now think of that as a silly superstition. How can a groundhog predict early spring or six (6) more weeks of winter?

I always shake my head every time I hear about the historical background of Groundhog's Day. Certainly a myth in my honest opinion.

I do not believe the groundhog. We just need to watch the  weatherman.

Definitely just a "show" thing - all it depends on is the weather the day of the event...nothing to do with predictions lol

All about the show and the money the towns make promoting the groundhog.  It is just a fund-raising activity.  It's too foggy here in NE KY for an animal to see its shadow this morning.
Have a wonderful day!

No.  He didn't see it.  I play the game. But whether or not the sun shines today does not determine the weather for the next few weeks.  Besides that no matter what he sees or doesn't see we will have 6 more weeks of winter. It is the first of February. :D

Think it is silly but I hope they are right this ear.  Tried of below zero weather and being stuck in the house

No, of course not.

But it made for a pretty good movie. (You know; Groundhog Day with Bill Murray).

Sorry I never have believed this myth, those people in Pennsylvania really get into it

I live out in the country, and I have plenty of my own ground hogs in my yard, last summer I saw a momma with 3 little ones :)

Remember that the sun always shines. We just can’t see the sun every day because of the hydrologic cycle. Whatever color clouds are when visible probably indicates how close they are to being ready to condense (darker clouds basically mean imminence of rain and/or snow).

I think that it is stupid because if he sees his shadow, that would mean it is a sunny day out so why would that mean 6 more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow it should mean 6 more weeks of winter.  :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman:

When I lived in Pa., he always saw his shadow.  Think it was just a way for the weatherman to say we were in for another cold weather season.  Stays so cold and snowy up there.  My Mother's birthday was Groundhog day so I always wished her happy Birthday, Groundhog.  I live in Florida now.
