I have had a Roku for many years, but even though I can get Netflix with my Xfinity remote, I would want Roku so I could get the BYU Channel anyway. It solves the problem of getting good clean entertainment I can trust.

I almost bought one today. Put it back. I am still not sure what all I can get for free. Netflix (which I would never watch anyway) is not free nor are other like sites.  Maybe Santa will bring me one. lol.

I used to be a techie but things go so fast that I can't keep up anymore. I;ve heard of Roku and Amazon fire sticks but don't know what they do or how to use them. I am stuck in my cable contract for another year and it's driving me nuts.  I noticed that they have On Demand and Netflix is on there but I've never tried to use it cause I don't know if I'd have to pay extra or not. I guess I'll have to do some info searching to find out all about this stuff (which it'll take me a year to do-LOL) so I'm ready.

My son bought me some kind of box about 2 years ago and set it up but it's such a hassle. I have to change the HDMI1 to HDMI2, then pick one of the apps, then I can watch movies (only movies), and if I don't update it every so often, it'll take forever to do so when I do want to use it. Since hubs doesn't like movies, it's not worth the effort. BTW, the movies are all blockbusters and  new ones, not even 6 months old.

For those that don't really know how Roku works, it's basically a "container" for streaming channels. You need an HDMI port on your TV and you need high-speed internet. You can browse and download channels to your Roku, just like apps on your phone. Some of them are free and usually have commercials, some have monthly subscription fees.

For example, I canceled my Directv because it was $160/mo and we only really watched a handful of channels. Got a Roku, signed up for Sling TV (blue package $25 + Hollywood extra $5 + cloud DVR which is $5 but I got mine free for beta testing), Netflix (standard HD $12), Amazon Prime ($10), total $52/mo. Saved $108/mo. I also have free apps w/ads, Roku has its own channel, Pluto TV, Pandora, Popcornflix, Tubi TV, YouTube, Retro Flix. I love old b/w movies, so I have a lot of free classic movie/tv channels.

we have roku and firestick..hubby watches both all the time..amazon prime has lots of movies...and on the roku you can download the redbox on demand app for movies..love them both

Thank you! That's exactly what I wanted to know. I had looked into Sling TV and they had most of the channels we watch and had planned to cut the cable after my contract is up. Now I can't wait until the ned of next year. I'll be cutting my cable unless they give me a deal for $50 a month. .

Not a Roku fan at all the thing just has nothing in it and becomes more costly then you think just to get what you want.
