Sleeping in a Hotel
« on: November 02, 2018, 11:03:36 am »
It seems I may have an opportunity to take a vacation I would really like in a year or so!  It would be great and last about 8-9 days.  The problem is we will be in a different hotel almost every night and if I say I want a "single" I will pay about $600 more than if I accept a "double."  Double means I will share a hotel room with another single lady on the trip.

Here's the issue:  I sleep terribly sometimes.  I have enough trouble sleeping at home .  If I can't sleep I watch TV, turn on a light and read, or play on my computer.  I usually sleep well when it's time to go to sleep but wake up at 3-4am or don't go to sleep until about 2am. It's often one or the other!  So what is already making me a bit uncertain? The freakin' sleeping arrangements.

Can you sleep in hotels easily?

I love staying in hotel's and as long as I have back ground noise, so I download one of the many free "white noise" apps for my phone and the room is cold or hot depending on the weather I can sleep like a baby.

I do have trouble. The hotel has to be comfortable to be relaxing.

After I get use to the environment  the light, the heat or ac and people walking outside the room etc, then I'm ok.  I would not like to change rooms every night because I would have to make those adjustments all over again.  I don't like sharing a room with strangers because I like the room dark and warm because I wake up if a cell phone light comes on.  There is nothing like my own bed.  If you really want to go and can afford to stay by yourself, go for it.

I can fall asleep just about anywhere, but I don't get particularly good quality sleep. I just recently started using a CPAP. It has its problems, but I know it's good for me and my sleep. As for your situation, book a single if it's just you! You don't wanna be sharing a room with some random person. It's a VACATION -- enjoy yourself!!

It is hard enough  staying in a motel room with hubby, he has restless legs so of course we have to have sperate beds or he  would be kicking me all night, but he  also gets up 2-3 times a night, Doesn't sleep good and I understand because he has prostate  cancer and it worries him some times also  his bladder  works over time. Oh the joys of old age. But he is  doing great with the cancer. It is  very slow  growing. As the doctors said  he will  die of something  else. On top of every thing else I am a very light sleeper.. No way could I sleep in the same room with a stranger.

Yes, does not bother me as long as it is a clean environment; it is nice to be away from home once in awhile and not be concerned with having to tidy up!

I travel on business and never sleep well in hotels. I would pay the extra money and sleep in a single.

For some reason I always sleep great in hotels and cruise ship cabins. Go figure.

I used to like hotels but that was a long time ago.  When it comes to 'lights out' I need to be in my home, with my husband, in my bed with my pillow and my/our pets.

Anything else is unacceptable.

Different family members of my husband have invited us to visit and stay at their home.  That, too, would not work out at all for me.

Yes I do it for my job about four days out of the week.  See if you can pick a roommate who has the same sleep habits as you.  Try taking melatonin an hour before bed.  I take it sometimes and it helps be sleep better and I can usually sleep through the night.

I typically don't have issues sleeping  anywhere. You could try taking Melatonin; it's natural and it might help.

Thanks for everyone's input so far.  I will definitely check back because I just like reading your comments.  I do take melatonin at home once in a while.  My issue is that I'm not sure about having the TV on or the lights if I need to read.  I'm thinking I may have to splurge on a single room if I decide to take the vacation.  I also agree that a number of different hotels is certainly not going to help the situation.  Definitely a down side!

I have never stayed in a hotel, but if I was to do so, I don't think sleeping will be difficult for me.

I miss the good old days when you could find a room with a waterbed (like I have at home).
