The Second Amendment
« on: October 03, 2009, 02:12:04 am »
Hi Guys,

I just wanted to know what your thought's are about The Second Amendment. I've been trying to Convince my mom to let us have a gun in the house for protection for the past year now. Ever since I opened my eyes to reality. My ex boyfriend and his family were shot and killed from a break in robbery due to gangs and his father's affiliation. When I moved to where I am now two years ago, I've noticed an increased crime rate. Lot's of murders, drug trafficking, rapes, robbery's, ect. Now I'm getting more paranoid and have trouble sleeping at night because there was another recent murder a few days ago. I'm quite brave when it comes to things like this but I just want my family to be safe. If you could understand what I mean.

So what do you guys think about The Second Amendment, and having weapons in the house for protection?

I think it'd be useful as long as it's kept where younger kids could not reach and the safety was kept on at all times unless it was needed.

I also think that if you keep a gun in the house with younger kids, you should take them to a shooting range and teach them gun safety. Of course when they are old enough and mature enough.

I agree with you 100% but I know it is controversial.  I don't have one because I am lucky enough to live in a great neighborhood and a great city with a low crime rate.  I also have three big dogs which I think are an excellent deterrent to crime.  If I was afraid, I would get a gun, take a course and keep it safely out of reach of children.  Why should you be a sitting duck for someone who intends to harm you?  I at least think I deserve a fighting chance to keep someone from taking my life in my own home.

I think that people have a right to own a gun, but, each gun should have a marker or something on the bullets that is unique so it can be traced back to the gun.

I believe every house in america should own a gun. If someone tried breaking into my house they'd have a hole the size of a basketball through their mid section.

I think shell casings can typically be traced back via a manufacturer batch number or some such identifier...

Oh good, I get to get into politics. Forget the second amendment. If the Government has its' way, we won't have that amendment for to long.

I live just outside of Los Angeles where it seems that EVERYONE has a gun and I think it is a good idea.  If the criminals have guns then why shouldn't we?  I think we are lucky to live in a country where we have the option to decide.

the motivation in owning a gun.

There are three primary reasons the Second Amendment was ever created:

1)  The authors claimed that, at the time it was written, the national military force was not mobile enough to provide full protection to the country.  We were a very young country that just finished a revolution and there was legitimate fear that numerous European forces would attempt to invade or grab land around us.  Thus, the authors proposed the idea of state run/regulated militias, which would act in the event of an invasion until the federally supported military could make their way to the location.

2)  People lived on the fringes of the land we had claimed as part of the US.  There were constant battles between Native Americans and "colonists"/now US citizens.  The national military force couldn't be anywhere and everywhere at the same time, so it was necessary for the people living in those regions to have firearms and regulated militias in order to protect their lives, land, and the claims the US had on the land.

3)  The Anti-Federalists, who were responsible for pushing the Bill of Rights into the Constitution, were opposed to a strong, central government as they feared any government not heavily regulated by the citizens would inevitably gain too much power and become corrupt.  The Second Amendment was, in some form or fashion (probably an idealistic one), supposed to serve as protection from a corrupt government.

Now clearly, in the last 200 and some years the scenery has changed...um a hell of a lot.  The first two reasons listed aren't all that valid these days, I think that's something everyone can agree on.  The third is very idealistic and frankly extremely naive.  If we assume the national government became so corrupt that it started some "Reign of Terror tactics" in the US, I think we can also assume they would make use of the US military.  A bunch of disorganized citizens in various states across the huge expanse that is the US don't stand a chance against arguably the most powerful, mobile military in the world...I don't really care how many AR-15s you have, not a chance.

But regardless, I support a person's right to own a firearm.  I don't own one personally as I don't feel it's necessary, but there are arguments for both sides.  I think it's fair to say there should be stronger regulations and they should be more difficult to obtain (and much more enforcement on the Black Market is very necessary).

Oh good, I get to get into politics. Forget the second amendment. If the Government has its' way, we won't have that amendment for to long.

Don't be ridiculous.  People have been trying to get the Second Amendment removed from the Constitution since it was put there.  Hell, people (Federalists...many of whom we deem our Founding Fathers) were avidly opposed to the entire idea of having a Bill of Rights in the first place.  It's not going anywhere.

Yep, I don't think It will be going anywhere. Isn't there something protecting it from being banned?

I BELIEVE THE 2ND AMENDMENT was put there for a good reason...and if guns were outlawed, only criminals would have guns...can you imagine that...it would give criminals free reign to do whatever they wanted to do!  At least now they have to consider that there may be a gun waiting for them.

Criminals own guns illegally.  Anyone who wants to ban the right to bear arms and thinks that all the criminals in the country are going to say, "oh well-I guess I'd better turn in my gun..." is just plain stupid!  If they ban guns, only criminals and police will have them.  By the time you call 911 and an officer gets to your house, you and your family are dead.  I think it's a great idea to own a gun!  People just need to be responsible about it.

I firmly believe in the 2nd amendment, as I believe in the entire Constitution.  My boyfriend has a conceal and carry permit and his handgun is on him all the time.
