I don't ask. But most of my family takes their shoes off in their own home so we do that in each other's homes.

I think it’s a good idea to do that but I myself have never done it. My daughter does it all her house and it does keep her rugs in nice condition longer than mine.

I'm not saying that there aren't people that do that because of germs, but I've never heard anyone say that's why they do it.  If you have carpet or hardwood it will last a whole lot longer if you don't wear shoes on that flooring.  Personally, I don't think I could ever ask someone to take their shoes off to come in my house.  But I don't judge those who do.

No, but I understand why people require it.

As a matter of fact, I may require it in my next home.  I don't get much company anyway.

Nope - - BUT I think it would be a good habit for Americans to get into.  When I think of all the "stuff" that comes in the house, and when I pick up pieces of outdoors that I see on the carpet! :P

If you lived in a brand new house with all brand new flooring. But FYI the installers are going to walk on it with boots on.....

Maybe it is just me but I tend to go outside a few times and taking off and on shoes just to run outside for a few seconds is aggravating.  I would feel foolish asking guests to remove their shoes before they walked on my precious floors. If I get wet or muddy then yeah I take them off and don't tromp all over the house tracking mud and water every where.  But other wise it is no big deal  There isn't that much nasty in my back yard or any where else.  The ground is probably cleaner than the people that fix your burger at McDonald's. Just Sayin.

Many of the guests that visit my home understand that it is an implied/unwritten rule. However, it grinds my gears when non-guests (e.g., the DirecTV guy) do not put on those booties over their shoes prior to entering my home.

Yes, I do. I ask them to please take off their shoes because I have just cleaned my floors. I surely do not want to do it again. :)

For the most part my shoes are off weather  any one take s their shoes off or  not. I just like to go  without them summer or winter. I prefer  certain socks to wear. But id we go somewhere  and they don't want you to wear shoes  in the house then so be  we just take them off. But if that is the case they should  provide some foot covering for whomever does  take their shoes off.  Be a good host.

I have asked people to take off their shoes in my home because I have carpet. If I  had tile, depending on who it is, I would just mop the floor after they leave.
