How do you deal with a mean boss.

If you really need the job, it makes this situation 10 times worse. I had one that I put up with for 10 years and finally I had to leave. Avoid them when you can, always look busy, never be caught short of words, and unfortunately you may have to flatter them occasionally without making it look obvious. They're mean because they're insecure. Just remember that the biggest thing you are learning from them is how NOT to treat people, then be sure you never forget. Good luck.

and oh yes, i agree with flattering them. stroke
that ego here and there. never roll your eyes or
sigh --  not even behind their back, because if
you're dealing with a boss that you have to do
this with, chances are they have eyes in the back
of their head...

my last boss would preach about how negativity
motivates people and she would never praise or
show appreciation, as she thought this would
make her look weak, i'm sure.

if your boss is like that, keep a smile on your face
at all times and never argue or raise your voice.
it will KILL them to know they aren't getting under
your skin, because that's what they want the most.

its all about control. taking that away from
them is very easy, without technically doing it

My thoughts exactly. I've dealt with assholes when I worked in retail. It was awful-- a HUGE reason I will never go back to that. Just be nice and ignore them when possible-- if they keep giving you crap for no reason, quit. If you can't quit, create a coalition of employees and start a mutiny! Overrun the boss! Then pillage and plunderrrr! ARR ARR ARRRRR!

I have dealt with mean bosses before......it depends on the personality of the boss....he/she may not realize you are uncomfortable. I would bring it to his/her attention. And as indicated by the other posts you can ignore and endure
