How Do You Handle Your Temper?
« on: July 10, 2018, 10:42:37 am »
Are you extremely irritable, or do you easily get a grip when something doesn't seem right at all? I've had the same temper my whole life. I just manage to resist taking it out on others nowadays.

I take a happy pill, and it helps me tremendously, it took me over 30 years to accept that I needed to take something, so happy I did

I take happy pills too but normally when I get stressed I cry and stay to myself not wanting to speak to anyone.

I usually ball my eyes out when I am mad.

I internalize, add other violations, let them fester and vent inappropriately long after the initial infraction. If there are no other violations (which is rare) the anger dissipates and dissolves. I have gotten better over the years and started realizing that getting angry never really solves the problem. My wife and I are not seeing eye to eye at this time because she brought something up from over two years ago as a reason for her behavior over the last several months. This came to a head last Wednesday via e-mail. I have kept the e-mail but I also have taken some long walks with my dogs, tried to see it from her side, and have also analyzed where she is coming from. I realize that we are two different individuals and that she will probably never get over this by virtue of her upbringing. Which means she will continue to bring it up till the day I die. My getting angry will not solve this nor will trying to talk it out...somewhat of an impasse at this time.

I really do not have a bad temper. However, I have felt like my temper flared a time or many times. I tend to take a deep breath and tell myself life is to short to have ill feelings. Try to remain a happy person. Not an easy task at times. But I will always try.

My coping skill is to exercise... I embraced that way when I first started college.  I can tell when I haven't exercised in a while because I start being bothered by things that I just need to let go... like ruminate the thoughts over & over.  At those points I go out & walk or run or something.

I don't have a temper & rarely get angry... Exercise as a coping skill works wonders.

An excellent proverb for this topic.....

Prov 15:1 New International Version
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

I keep it under control. I speak to it internally.

I try not to get to the point where I need to handle my temper, I don't let things get out of control, I walk away or don't say anything that will add fuel to the fire.

I'm not generally stressed.  I consider my self a fairly patient and rational person.  In fact at one time my attorney and a judge voiced the same. When given a reason to be angry I may spat back - I may try and defend my point of view.  I may just completely disagree with someone and avoid them as I know we don't see eye to eye and will just get defensive again.  It's not worth it.  If I'm ever stressed at work - my bosses say it's not worth it.  Just stay later or come in earlier or ..... So really stress is handled in a non stressful matter to balance itself out.

I came from a very angry and hostile family.  I could get angry easily (though not like the others), but I hated temper tantrums of my family.

In my 30's I became a Christian, and realized God would help me be an even-tempered person. I learned to express myself firmly if needed, and when to walk away.

Instead of being angry, pray for calm, and pray for the other person. I am not perfect at this, but as I try to walk the walk, the Lord makes it part of my new nature.

I am now 75, and it has been worth the faith and trust in the Lord for sure.

When I get upset, I just pray that I can keep my mouth shut.  Not every thought is worth speaking.  I like hitch0403's  answer.  I have to commit that to memory.

I don't have much of a temper. But once in awhile it will make itself known. Then watch out. Mostly it is when I see someone hurting a child or an older person. Then I can give it out with the best of them. Without  cursing too. I hate to see a child hurt or an old person.

I keep my temper under control for the most part. I may vent about it a little later after I have calmed down.
