Does this bother you?
« on: June 16, 2018, 04:42:56 am »
I am having a discussion on another site where a snotty woman is complaining because cashiers have asked her about products she is purchasing. She claims they stand there and read the back of the box like a novel (which I do not believe - I have NEVER seen a cashier do this) and how they need to not waste her time or other customers and on and on about not being professional.

I have also had a discussion, do not remember where, in which people are offended if someone asks them where they got their shirt, shoes, bag, or whatever.

So my question is this - does it bother you if someone asks you where you got your shoes, or maybe your child's shoes, or shirt or something like that?  Personally, it doesn't bother me.  If I remember I will tell them.

And, does it bother you if a cashier asks you a question about something you are purchasing?  I have had cashiers ask what it is used for or if it is good (if it is food) and I do not care at all to answer them.  I think some people just look for reasons to be offended.

I see no harm in letting someone know where I got something I bought. I might be a little more wary if a stranger approached me out of the blue and asked me that though. I usually prefer a little friendly banter with the cashier in stores too.

I'm a person who asks everyone I care to, including total strangers, about something they are wearing, i.e., clothes and/or perfume. They usually seem quite pleased that I asked.

I have been a cashier myself and have asked people questions about something they're buying and they never seem to be offended. But some people are offended by lots of things or everything, so there you go.

I personally feel it's a compliment if someone asks me about anything.  8)

It never bothers me.  I take it as a compliment that they like my clothes or purse or something enough to ask.  I figure cashiers ask because they just don't know about EVERYTHING the store carries.  :glasses-nerdy:

I've had cashiers ask me about food I'm buying. Usually it's vegetarian frozen foods, so I'm happy to tell them. People are so wary about eating tofu or meatless food. Yes, vegetarian and vegan food can still taste delicious.

I don't see why any would get offended by someone asking a simple question. People get so uptight about trivial things.

I have no problem. That's how things get out by word of mouth. I love to give my opinion as well as someone giving me theirs. No room for ignorance

I saw a kid with a pair of purple sandals on and I asked her mom where she got them.  I have told people oh I like your shirt or bag or whatever and ask where they got it from.

Well that's what I thought.  Some people see it as oh you want to be like me.  Uh no.  I saw a shirt a girl was wearing and I asked her where she got it.  She got it at Walmart.  So guess what, I went and got me one and got mom one too. lol

I have had people ask me stuff like that. The one cashier she did stand there a few seconds and look at the package and read on it. I didn't have a problem with it.  Yeah people just look for reasons to be offended.

I'm flattered that someone would be interested in  knowing about something I was wearing

It depends on the person - though I have gotten used to it. I'm not sure why cashiers would waste their time asking - generally they just want to get through orders as quickly as possible, especially since that is part of their pay/evaluation

never really had that issue, but being a cashier previously, sometimes they may just be trying to make the customer's day better by making small talk

Cashiers get paid the same amount no matter how many people they wait on and there is no evaluation. It's a flunky job that anyone can do. I have been a cashier and I didn't really care about getting finished as quickly as possible. It is better to do things right that in a hurry.
