Internet privacy

How safe is our information on the internet?  Starting to feel very wary of it after getting a warning from one of these sites that my info is out there.

I use chromebook for anything that I consider a worry. 5 years on and no issues. If you do online shopping and banking you need the right safe system and of course ease of use.

Your info is online no matter what. If you have a bank account even if YOU do not access it online it is still online. Same with medical info and everything else. Basically you have no privacy.

Not sure what you mean you got a warning from "one of these sites that your info is out there".

One of these sites that you put your name on - that anyone puts your name on and accesses all your info but you have to pay to see what it is.  I think it was my family accessing ancestry.com.  I just deleted it.

Oh. I have clicked that link on yahoo where it says type in any name and wait 9 seconds and you will be surprised. That is foolishness and click bait.  It takes more like 15 minutes and then they want you to pay. I don't think ancestry is a bad site and just because you deleted it doesn't mean your info is not still out there.  Almost every company has records online. I tried to explain to a lady at the bank who refuses to write checks or use the online banking that the accounts are still online. It isn't just on paper at the local bank.

You bank info, your credit cards, your medical records, everything is online. Not all of that is accessible to the general public but things like arrest records, marriage and death records, previous addresses, even if you have a gun permit and whether you are registered as democrat or republican is all apparently public info and available online. You have basically no privacy any more.

I would delete an email that says your info is exposed online. I have seen that before. But you would be surprised at how much info about you is available online.  If you sign the online guest book for a funeral home and then later somebody types in your name in to google where you signed your name that can show up in the hit list where you searched for your name.

Only way for it to be safe is to use VPN + other such programs that blocks out ISP and that still isn't enough to get 100% privacy sadly.

That is not really safe either. You cannot hide your information from being online.  A LOT of stuff is public info and it IS online and you cannot stop it.

Google your first and last name along with the city and state you live in.  You may be surprised.  You can do it two ways and get different results.

Your first and last name and city and state

"your first and last name and city and state"

Using the quotation marks narrows down the search.

Today privacy was lost a long time ago when companies sell your information and hackers can get to it

I did say "that still isn't enough to get 100% privacy sadly" .... VPN does block a set amount of info and encrypts the traffic that is sent through your (ISP)=Internet Service Provider, Making it somewhat harder for your ISP to see your details in an easy coded text etc.
