I call them end pieces and heel pieces. I do eat them. I love to toast them in the toaster, then add butter with toppings like jelly, peanut butter. Sometimes the end pieces taste better the center pieces! :P :P :P :P :P

Yes, I do eat them. The end pieces taste the same as the other slices.

If I want toast I will eat them, otherwise I throw in a bag in the freezer to take to the park for the birds.

My great-grandma: "Don't eat the end pieces of bread. They cause brain disease."
My mom: Your great-grandma was probably wrong.  After all, she fed the end pieces of bread to the dogs, and they never developed brain diseases.  It's okay to eat the end pieces of bread when you start and finish a loaf.
Me: Sometimes the end pieces taste extra good; sometimes they're burnt and inedible - it depends on the type of bread and the individual loaf.  They're smaller, so you might still be hungry after using two of them to make a sandwich.
My dad: Loves to eat end pieces. "Give me the ends!" "I'll take the end pieces." "Save the end pieces for me."  Used to justify this attitude with the idea that no one else wants the end pieces.  That's not true - he simply wants them all for himself!

Enjoy your end pieces everyone! Have a wonderful day!

The end pieces of bread are the best. Why?
You toast them...they do not crumble.
Because they are stronger, they do not break.
Apply butter, peanut butter or any other spread.

I buy good bread and eat the heals. I hate to waste. Good bread is pricey, but a treat and a nutrition help.

I used the "heel" this morning to have my coconut oil spread on for breakfast.  it tasted great.

P.S. If you make your own bread crumbs, they work great.  So you would have an excuse to let them get stale

They do help the rest of the bread stay fresh longer too.

Depends. Not all heel pieces are equal.

I've heard them referred to both heels and ends.  I use em' in our household but usually only one.  I'll take the heel from the last loaf and a full piece from the newest loaf.  The first loaf is always used as a barrier to keep the inside pieces fresh.  I've even used the heels for grilled cheese.  Want not waste not!

I love making grilled cheeses out of the end pieces of bread. It tastes so toasty and buttery, not soggy like the middle pieces get. :)

I have never ate the ends of the bread.  I always throw those away.  The crust of the bread is not my favorite and that would be like eating all crust.

We call it the heel and nobody really likes to eat them. Sometimes it gets thrown out if no recipe calls for bread pieces just because they sit there unwanted and get stale.
