Sold my mom's house
« on: February 08, 2018, 07:02:27 am »
I sold my mother's house - well legally my house since I purchased it after she passed away in 2010.  It needed so much work as it was built in the early 80's and nothing much ever done to it.  It was a blessing as I actually made a profit but sad at the same time.  So many memories made over so many years.

I know what you mean about the memories, we sold our house after living there 42 years and it's still hard to accept.

Glad you made a profit, it is sad, but now someone else will get to make memories there.  AND bonus you don't have the responsibility any more.

My grandma was the type to do something like this. When she passed away, my parents and I searched her house high and low before selling it... no hidden money other than a cache of change totaling a few hundred dollars.

Its hard dealing with your parents' home and other personal items.  My mom and dad died within a year of each other so I was still coping with losing my mom and dealing with her stuff when dad passed away.  Being the oldest of 6 kids the illnesses and dealing with everything afterwards fell mostly on my shoulders.  Guess I'm still grieving but hopefully getting better.  Bless your heart for having to deal with all of it.

I understand how you feel.  You will always have good memories of the house and your happy times there, now someone else will make memories in your mom’s house.  That’s a good thing, I’m sure your mom would be happy.

I'm sure that was bittersweet.  I wish you the best in your next endeavors.

When my mother moved into an assisted living apartment.  We sold the house where I grew up and it was so sad for me to think I'd never go there again.  But one day the new owner invited me over for coffee to to see her decorating efforts.  It was so easy. The house didn't even look like my childhood home.  The old adage is true: "Home is where the heart is" and that was with my mother in her apartment. No one ever said "Home is where the house is."

Back in the 90s., my childhood home went for auction. Those were my happiest and saddest days in that house, but mostly happy. The people that bought it after we moved to another home had both died and the kids had their own places, so they decided to auction the house. I really liked that home  so I went to the auction. Imagine my surprise and shock to see not a thing was changed sine we moved out in the early 60s. Funny how small the house looked to me that day! The floor linoleum was the same and not worn or ripped. The kitchen cabinets were the same, even the color, and even as a kid, I really liked those cabinets. The walls were still the same colors dad used to paint them.  I'll bet if dad hadn't taken the wallpaper down and painted they would have been the same walls. (I hated my bedroom walls dark blue and light blue stripes). Anyway, mom and dad must have sold them the stove with the house because even that was still there. Oh how I wished I could have just bid on that stove! It had a deep "soup" well and a griddle inside the oven that would pull out to fry (most of the time SPAM). Sadly, they had the auction at the wrong time of day, 5 p.m., so only one other person showed up. It was tempting for me to bid but I was afraid for some reason, probably because my husband wouldn't have had time to help if something went wrong. Final bid was $5500 so of course, the heirs wouldn't sell.  They finally sold it to one of those secondary real estate companies for only $15K. Sad....it was worth double that.

I am sure that was hard.

I did not have a good mother, so I have no sentiment in that area.

However, I would love to have a house to sell. I really need some $$$ to move into a cleaner, safer place.
