Phones
« on: January 31, 2018, 07:08:13 am »
Both my teenage daughters keep dropping their phones and cracking the screens on them, I am tired of replacing their phones for them.  It is really expensive, is this wrong?

Is your question is wrong that they keep dropping them or if it's wrong that you keep replacing them? Or that they are really expensive? Confusing.

Why don't you Otter Box them?

Maybe you  shouldn't replace them for a while and make them  sweat it out for awhile, give them a lot of chores that need to be done, Teenage daughters should know how to  clean house, do the laundry and such. Make them earn  the cost of their phones and maybe they will take better care of them.  Chances are they do it on purpose to get the newer and better ones.

Nothing is valuable enough until you end up being responsible for it & you pay for it out of your own pocket! Time to cut the umbilical cord like my parents did to me when they kicked me out of the house because I dragged on finding a job after graduating college. Why bother trying when you get free cable, housing, food, utilities, laundry.....etc....! It took me, the cat, & the dog getting booted out to find a job & housing in order to become responsible & learn to take care of my things!

it is not wrong  you need to teach them responsibility and maybe getting them a protective case to help inthe cracking of the screen

I dropped my phone and cracked the screen for the first time ever. I made sure I got a phone for my new phone the same day because phones are expensive.

Yeah, I would make them "earn" replacements since it happens so often. I hate to think they're doing it on purpose like someone said, but you never know! Kids are technology obsessed these days. Honestly, I have a phone with a terribly cracked screen and I still use it regularly, often forgetting the cracks are even there. It doesn't effect its functions in the least.

I have never dropped my phone and cracked the screen.  You can buy cases that protect the screens.  I would not replace them.  They can either work and earn the money and replace it themselves or they can have a cracked screen OR they can learn to take care of their things.

I doubt they do it on purpose.  Most people are just careless.  And if somebody auto replaces the phone and you get a new one why care if you drop it.  I have an otterbox and I have accidentally dropped mine a couple of times but my phone stayed protected.  Thank goodness.  I try hard to take care of it because I gave a LOT of money for it.

Maybe you should think about buying plastic casings for the phones and having your kids carry them in leather wallets made for phones. Then when they drop them, they shouldn't crack.

They need to be responsible and not take you for granted.  Let them use the cracked screen for awhile and earn money to help pay for a new phone.  My son ran over his with the lawnmower and I had him replace it because the phone should have been in the house or safely secured  while he was cutting grass.  He takes better care of it now - no more problems.

They probably just aren't aware of just how expensive those phones are and what it takes to replace them. So, as some of the others have suggested, I'd recommend not replacing them right away next time. Let them earn them back. Or if you're worried you won't be able to contact them as easily, perhaps replace the phones they broke with super cheap and basic cell phones. They probably still won't like that, but it keeps you connected and out less money.

My daughter dropped hers  to (in the bathroom) and cried because I would not replace it.  Told her to take the money out of her savings or save up to replace it.   She finally realized I was not going to cave in and bought her own along with a rubberized case.  They are way to expensive today to not take care of them.

Oh they know how expensive the phones are.  They don't care.  Kids are to entitled these days.  They just expect every thing to be handed to them.  And when it is they have no sense of the value of a dollar.  If they had to earn the money to buy a new phone and use a busted one until they can pay for a new one themselves I bet they would take better care of them in the future.
