Do NY's Resolutions Work? What to do differently?
« on: January 05, 2018, 05:55:51 am »
In what cases have you realized that New Year's resolutions do and don't work?

I find that when I make a goal instead of a resolution it tends to work because I can keep up with goals throughout the year by making monthly agenda action steps towards that goal.

Also, working on goals for the new year in October (or some other previous time) instead of Jan 1st tends to help also.

What are your experiences?  What can we do differently to deter from falling into previous patterns?

One thing I learned from a fellow I work with is to make resolutions fun rather hindering.  For instance he opted to see one concert per month.  He didn't see a concert per month but he did she several and opted for different more affordable outings in the months concerts weren't practical.  So at the end of the year he'd created memories he would otherwise had missed out on.  Rather creating physical better myself resolutions (Which I too started to tackle back in October) I'm opting to complain less.  Should help my relationships at home and at work better.  Put me in a happier mental state.  Happier me should lead to other benefits too.

I am somewhat obsessive compulsive-especially with goals and resolutions. I start thinking about the upcoming year's goals in October and November. I write them down during the first week of December and fine tune them for the two following weeks. The last week of December is spent transferring these goals for weekly, monthly and quarterly review in my planners. I typically look to increase quantifiable goals by ten percent over the previous year's goal. For example, if I made one hundred dollars on one income stream I will now hit one hundred and ten dollars. If I did two thousand miles wlking, running, biking I will do two thousand and two hundred. It is kind of hard to make goals like that for fixed income jobs so I aim to reduce the time needed to complete tasks-better efficiencies.

Well, if you got to change the way you do, it will be different.

Not sure what you mean by "do they work". It is not some magical thing. You make a goal and you either do it or you do not. If you do it then yes it works. If you don't then no it doesn't. I don't make them.

I don't usually make new year resolutions. I tend to have certain goals that I set throughout the year and try to achieve them. The only resolution that I might make is to have a better year than I had last year-- nothing specific. :)

Making resolutions fun rather than hindering is excellent advice.  It's also healthier to focus on other aspects of goals rather than the hard part; for getting healthier instead of thinking about exercising think about drinking more water and getting more rest.  Thanks for your insight!

I also start thinking about the new year in October, I think it has something to do with that month being the Equinox. I admire how specific you are in leveling up your achievements.  Blessings this year and those beyond!

A HORRIBLE situation happened in my life yesterday so I definitely understand.  Not to sound patronizing, but try to focus on solutions and other goals. It's still the beginning of the year, this doesn't dictate your whole 2018.  Blessings!

I didn't make one this year. My new year started off depressing
