Oregon and Old buddy
« on: November 27, 2017, 08:00:58 am »
....was reading an response from a previous post I'd made about what I want for Christmas.  A full tank of gas came up and Old buddy mentioned it being illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon.  Say what???? So it got me thinking.. I don't know much about Oregon.  What kind of seasons do they have?  Is it real real cold in the winter?  Real real HOT in the summer.  Are the springs and summer anything at all like they are in Chicago-land?  Curious mind...thinking bout' the future and taking in information.

When my son was going to Northwestern for his Masters, I made several trips to Chicago and the weather in Portland is much more temperate. Summers have very few days over 90 and winter hardly ever have snow more than a few days (except in the mountains). There is some flooding (unless you live on a hill like we do), but fire season is always scary. I would not trade for anyplace I have been yet.

Thanks for the quick response.  Other than a trip down to TX I haven't traveled towards the West.  Perhaps Oregon is an area in which we should plan some vacation time.  Any advice on where tourists should visit?

I went to Oregon to visit with family a couple of months after Mt. St. Helens erupted. Boy was that something.  We went down on the coast for a couple of days an I really stuffed my self with fresh seafood. (I am from N.M.) so no  fresh here. But I think my favorite place of all was when we went to the Rose garden. I had  never seen so many beautiful roses of all  sorts. Then on to a  place near them that sold  rose bushes and I bought three of the ones  I really liked. Brought them home and they are still blooming even though  the house has been sold for quite a long time.

Our church secretary grew up there.  She says there's a lot of drugs.

Oregon is one of those places on my bucket list that I would like to visit.  Not sure how long it will be before I can get there.

I'm such a FC forum following nerd.  I've bing searched Coos Bay and have decided it's time to get a little more serious about Oregon.  My husband (being the gardener) would enjoy the rose garden more than I ... and as far as drugs go... I wonder if that's a particular area vs. others.  I mean, sadly, if you look hard enough there are drugs just about everywhere now.

It's a funny thing about traveling and 'daydreaming' about faraway places. There are a LOT of places I would like to see. Oregon isn't at the top of my list, but I have a mental picture of it and wouldn't mind going someday to see it in person.  I've been a few places away from home, but am not a frequent distance traveler - lots of places in the U.S. that I still want to experience, but in the end I absolutely love where I lay my head each night (the area not the actual house/neighborhood I am in).

My husband and I would love to travel more.  He wants to drive from where we live in Minnesota to California to visit his brother.
Along the way, we want to visit an online friend and business partner in Colorado and another in California.  We also want to go north to Oregon and Washington.....maybe we could sneak a visit in with oldbuddy.  (After all, oldbuddy got me started in Fusion Cash years ago!)

If Bitcoin keeps going like it is, we will get to make this trip sooner than I had ever dreamed.

I live in a suburb of Portland, but when I was running my business I traveled extensively all over the Northwest and had several customers I visited in Coos Bay and North Bend. If I were to take someone to see what I think is pectacular scenery, it would be the Coast, Columbia River Gorge and Crater Lake.

I liked it in Oregon, I lived up there for about 1 year, near the Washington line.

There are several things to see if plaining to go to Oregon.  There the Crater Lake National Park in the Cascade Mountains in southwestern Oregon.  It's a  water-filled caldera of an extinct volcano, Mount Mazama, and lava cliffs rise to heights of up to 2,000 feet around the lake.  Then there's Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.  It's formed by the Columbia River and has several waterfalls one being  Multnomah Falls - the second highest waterfall in the country.  You've got Cannon Beach.  There's the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon.  There's Washington Park in Portland which houses  International Rose Test Garden is located near the impressive Portland Japanese Garden and for children it's also got the Oregon Zoo as well as the Portland Children's Museum.
